Wrocław Gathers Thousands For Guitar World Record Attempt

On May 1, guitar enthusiasts unite to play 'Hey Joe' and aim for a new record.

On May 1, 2025, Wrocław will once again become the epicenter of guitar enthusiasts as it hosts the 23rd edition of the Guitar World Record attempt at the Market Square. This year, participants will gather to collectively play the iconic song "Hey Joe" by Jimi Hendrix in hopes of breaking the previous record of 7,967 guitars. The official attempt is scheduled for 16:00, and organizers are optimistic about surpassing the previous record.

To join the record attempt, participants need to bring a guitar or any stringed instrument and know five simple chords: C, G, D, A, and E. All types of guitars are welcome, including acoustic, classical, electric, and bass, as well as mandolins, banjos, ukuleles, and even handmade instruments. The atmosphere is electric, with guitarists arriving from all over Poland and beyond, eager to be part of this musical celebration.

Leszek Cichoński, the event's organizer, emphasizes that while breaking the record is a goal, the primary focus is on having fun and celebrating music. "It's not just about the Guitar World Record; it's about enjoying music and creating a community spirit," he stated. Cichoński's enthusiasm is palpable as he reflects on the event's history and its significance in promoting musical camaraderie.

Guitar enthusiasts are not just participating; they're bringing their families and friends along to share in the experience. Maksym, a first-time attendee from Wrocław, expressed his admiration for the event, saying, "I’m here with my 15-year-old brother, who is passionate about playing guitar. The atmosphere is fantastic!" Meanwhile, Zuza Grabowska from Katowice, a seasoned participant, shared her excitement, stating, "I’ve been coming here for years, and every time it feels just as exhilarating. I can’t imagine my life without playing the guitar!"

The event kicks off early in the day, with registration starting at 10:00 AM. Participants gather at the registration point near the statue of Aleksander Fredro, where they will receive wristbands and a commemorative Record Holder Certificate 2025. This year, the event is themed "Remember Woodstock!" to evoke the spirit of the legendary festival and its message of peace and love.

Throughout the day, a variety of performances and activities will take place. Grzegorz Skawiński will take the stage at 12:00 PM, performing songs from the popular band O.N.A. alongside Monika Pilarczyk, who will portray Agnieszka Chylińska. Other notable musicians include Al Anderson, who will perform "One Love" at 15:15, and Orianthi, who will showcase her talents with renditions of "Beat It" and "Voodoo Child" at 15:35.

In addition to the main performances, there will be workshops, contests, and exhibitions to engage attendees. A special exhibition titled "Legends of Guitar" will take place on Oławska Street, showcasing portraits of iconic guitarists. The Lower Silesian Public Library has also organized a YouTuber zone where online creators will conduct guitar and ukulele workshops.

As the clock ticks down to the official record attempt, excitement builds among the crowd. The previous record was set in 2023, and although 2024 saw a decline in participation with only 7,531 musicians, hopes are high for 2025. "I believe we can gather around 8,000 guitarists this year," Cichoński remarked, reflecting on the positive energy surrounding the event.

The Guitar World Record not only celebrates music but also fosters a sense of community among participants. Families are seen enjoying the festivities, and children are taking part in face painting and other activities designed to create a festive atmosphere. Mikołaj and Billi from Szczecin, who are attending for the first time, noted, "The vibe here is like a mini Woodstock, but in a city setting. Everyone is so friendly!"

As the clock strikes 16:00, the crowd will come together for the moment they’ve all been waiting for. "Hey Joe" will echo through the Market Square as guitarists strum their instruments in unison, creating a powerful and harmonious sound that embodies the spirit of the event. The results will be announced shortly after, and whether or not a new record is set, the day will undoubtedly be remembered as a celebration of music and community.

In the lead-up to the event, online registration opened in early April, allowing participants to secure their spots ahead of time. This year, the organizers have implemented a streamlined registration process to ensure a smooth experience for everyone involved. Participants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the song "Hey Joe" and practice the chords to ensure a successful performance.

As the sun sets on May 1, 2025, Wrocław will have once again hosted a remarkable gathering of guitarists, proving that music has the power to unite people from all walks of life. Regardless of the outcome, the Guitar World Record will continue to be a symbol of passion, creativity, and the joy of making music together.
