Wrestling circles are mourning the loss of legendary luchador Rey Mysterio Sr., who passed away at the age of 66 on December 20, 2024. Known off the ring as Miguel Angel Lopez Dias, his death was confirmed by his family and echoed through multiple wrestling organizations, including the Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. A heartfelt message released by the organization stated, "We send our most sincere condolences to his loved ones and raise our prayers to heaven for his eternal rest." Rey Mysterio Sr.'s legacy is one steeped not only in the accolades earned throughout his illustrious career but also through the family connections and mentorship he provided to aspiring wrestlers.

Born on January 8, 1958, in Tijuana, Mexico, Mysterio began his wrestling career early, making his professional debut on January 6, 1976, at "Day of the Kings." Over the span of his career, he transcended the sport of wrestling, showcasing the vibrant and acrobatic style of lucha libre to audiences around the world. His accolades include multiple championships, such as the WWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Championship and the Pro Wrestling Revolution Tag Team Championship, which he held for an astounding 2,374 days. He had stints with major wrestling promotions, including WCW and WWE, where he played pivotal roles.

Mysterio Sr. was also known as a mentor, coaching not only his nephew, WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio Jr., but also numerous other talent who have gone on to become stars within the wrestling industry. His gym, which he opened in 1987, became notable for training wrestlers like Konnan and Psicosis, helping to shape the future of lucha libre wrestling. The lucha style, renowned for its colorful masks and breathtaking aerial maneuvers, found its place on the global stage thanks to Mysterio Sr.'s influence and dedication to the sport.

The passing of such a figure has left his family and fans reflective of the incredible impact he had. Aalyah Mysterio, Rey Jr.'s daughter, shared her sorrow on Instagram, stating, "Forever grateful to you, uncle. Without you, my father would not be the person or the fighter he is today. Rest in peace, uncle." Her words resonate with many, echoing gratitude for the familial connection and the legacy he leaves behind.

Dominik Mysterio, often known as "Dirty" Dominik, similarly expressed his sorrow and admiration for his great-uncle through social media, posting nostalgic pictures from Mysterio Sr.'s celebrated career. These recollections remind fans of not just the wrestler but the family man who encouraged and inspired those closest to him.

Before officially retiring from wrestling, Mysterio Sr. continued fighting until as recently as April 2023, when he participated in a six-man tag team match. This vibrant resilience demonstrated his commitment to the craft and to his fans. Even as he stepped away from the ring, he remained closely connected to his family and the wrestling community, actively engaging with training young talent.
