Gainesville, Fla. — The world’s tallest teenager, Olivier Rioux, is set for what might be considered one of the most strategic seasons of his basketball career, yet it won’t include any regular-season games. Standing at 7-foot-9, Rioux has impressed not just with his height, but also with his talent. Now with the University of Florida, he finds himself at the center of attention, but he won’t be stepping foot on the court for official games this season.
According to Florida Gators coach Todd Golden, Rioux plans to redshirt during the 2024-25 season. This decision allows him to continue honing his skills without using up one of his precious four years of college eligibility. If he were to play even one game, he would begin the clock on his eligibility, which some, including Golden, see as not the best route for the young player.
“Had the popular Canadian played even one game, he would have burned one of his four seasons of college eligibility,” Golden explained, emphasizing the knowledge of how important this year could be for Rioux’s future. Instead, the team will focus on the young athlete’s development, allowing him to practice and grow alongside his peers without the pressure of game performances.
Coach Golden acknowledged the exposure Rioux has been receiving from fans and the media alike, noting how during games, Florida students have been chanting for “Oli.” During one recent game against Grambling State, even as Golden emptied the bench, he opted not to include Rioux, instead explaining the rationale to him during the hustle of the game. "I was just explaining to him, ‘Hey, the reason why I’m not putting you in right now is what we’ve talked about... This wasn’t a choice I made for him. This is something our program has discussed with him and his family,’” Golden shared.
Olivier, who turned 18 earlier this year, is handling the plan well, according to his coach. “He’s a great kid, and he’s coachable,” Golden added. Fans and teammates alike are eager to see him play, but it's clear the coaching staff believes this redshirt season could be just what he needs. The time spent will allow him to adapt to the rigorous training and lifestyle of college basketball.
This freshman year, marked by sideline practices and supportive chants from fans, may very well set the stage for Rioux’s anticipated debut as the world’s tallest college basketball player when he steps onto the court next fall. With his towering stature, Olivier Rioux is not just making headlines for his height but also for the thoughtful strategy behind nurturing his potential.
While the upcoming games will continue without his official involvement, anticipation is building for what his sophomore year will hold. Despite the wait, his unique positioning and strong support system surrounding him may very well yield significant success on the basketball court down the road. Given all the interest and enthusiasm surrounding him, it’s easy to wonder just how many records he will continue to break as he furthers his career.
