World Radio Day 2025: Celebrated For Climate Resilience

Radio remains indispensable for disseminative information during climate events and beyond, fostering community engagement and empowerment.

February 13 is recognized worldwide as World Radio Day, inaugurated by UNESCO in 2011 to celebrate the significant role radio plays as a communication medium. This year’s theme, "Radio and Climate Change," emphasizes the need for reliable information during times of climate crises and highlights how radio continues to serve as a lifeline to the most isolated communities.

The first radio transmission by the United Nations occurred in 1946, leading us to this day, which honors the power of sound waves. Despite technological advancements, radio has remained one of Brazil's most popular communication forms, with over 80% of the population tuning in regularly. It continues to carry news and information to regions without access to the internet, acting as the voice of the people, especially during emergencies.

Speaking on this occasion, Cristiano Lobato Flôres, Director-General of the Brazilian Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters (Abert), remarked, "Radio is indispensable for alerting communities about environmental issues and climate change... It is the primary source of information during natural disasters, considered reliable and capable of reaching the entirety of the population, especially those far from urban centers. The capacity for local engagement extends beyond simple entertainment, becoming integral for collective resilience.”

This year’s celebration also shines the spotlight on local voices, such as Nilda Dantas, who has been heard on air for nearly 58 years. Known as the 'Queen of Radio,' Nilda Dantas has long been the heartbeat of radio broadcasting within endangered communities. She attributes much of her love for radio to its ability to share diverse stories and connect with listeners on emotional levels. “When I first heard I was being recognized, I was shocked. The project I was part of was conducted far from my home, and I hadn’t pictured my story reaching across states. This helps showcase the importance of our narratives,” Nilda stated.

No less important is the role played by community radio stations like Terra FM 104.9, which has become the pulse of its local area. The station director, Osemberg Azevedo, noted, “For many years, radio has been the dream of our community. Today, it stands as our source of local news, arts, and social dynamics.” Thanks to financial support from cultural initiatives, these stations are being revitalized to strengthen their services.

The initiative by Brazil’s Ministry of Culture highlights the value of community radio. The partnerships formed through programs such as the Cultura Viva aim to promote diversity and inclusivity, allowing lesser-heard voices to reach wider audiences. "It is alarming how sometimes we have to fund these stations ourselves. Recognition from the government empowers us greatly," Azevedo commented.

Radio’s capacity for adaptation is evident as it evolves within the digital space. New methods of listener engagement, especially via social media and instant messaging, have enhanced audience interaction, allowing listeners to inform radio stations about local incidents and emergencies.

Nayara Lessa, director of the State Communication Secretariat, concluded, “Radio holds significant value within the Acrean society. While the internet might dominate larger cities, it remains our primary and trusted source of communication.” With every World Radio Day, there's renewed energy to amplify discussions around its importance and find ways to sustain the medium’s relevance.

World Radio Day serves not just as recognition of radio’s past, but as motivation to equip it for the future. It highlights the need to bolster innovative solutions for radio stations, particularly focusing on the environmental and social responsibilities they carry. The aim is to involve more voices and perspectives to improve local capacity building and information dissemination.

The commitment to sustainability, enhancement of technological capabilities, and strengthening of community engagement are key goals as we move forward. On this World Radio Day, let us continue to champion our voices through the powerful medium of radio!
