Workers Speak Out After Helene Flood Tragedy

Tragic impacts of Hurricane Helene raise safety concerns among employees and families devastated by loss

Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc across the Southeast U.S., with devastating flooding leading to significant loss of life and severe disruptions to communities. Among the hardest hit was Erwin, Tennessee, where floodwaters from the Nolichucky River swept through the parking lot of Impact Plastics, leading to tragic outcomes for workers caught on site. On the fateful day of the storm, the situation escalated, leaving two confirmed dead and four missing, as employees reported they were not allowed to leave the facility until it was too late.

The flooding started on Friday, September 29, as heavy rains lashed the region. The river rose dangerously high, submerging roads and leaving employees trapped inside the plastics factory. Jacob Ingram, one of the survivors, recounted the chaos as he and others tried to escape. Despite flash flood warnings, the workers were told to stay put until conditions worsened significantly. “They should’ve evacuated when we got the flash flood warnings, and when they saw the parking lot,” he stated. According to reports, by the time workers were finally allowed to evacuate, it was far too late for many.

While five employees did manage to cling to the back of a semi-truck, the water rapidly swept away the others. The National Guard deployed helicopters to assist with rescues, highlighting the severity of the flooding. A local hospital even undertook dramatic rescues of patients and staff who found themselves confined to the roof, demonstrating the urgent need for evacuation protocols and safety measures.

Gerald O’Connor, founder of Impact Plastics, expressed deep sorrow for the loss of employees through a statement, remarking, “We are devastated by the tragic loss of great employees.” Yet, workers like Robert Jarvis voiced frustration, insisting the company waited too long to act. Jarvis lamented, “When they told us we could leave, it was just too late. There was no way out.” The allegations have prompted the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to launch inquiries, aiming to discern whether the company had followed adequate safety protocols.

The emotional toll on the community has been immense. Bertha Mendoza, who worked at the plant, made what would be her last call to her husband, telling him she loved him and their children as floodwaters engulfed her. The devastation hit particularly hard for Erwin’s Latino community, which has expressed frustration over the lack of appropriate responses from local authorities. Emotional family members gathered to search for answers, hoping for updates on their missing loved ones.

Alongside immediate safety concerns, the aftermath of Hurricane Helene has raised alarms over long-term health risks. Many residents of the Carolinas were left without access to clean water and electricity, and the potential for water contamination looms large. Delayed recovery efforts have made it difficult for citizens to access emergency services, increasing worries about infectious diseases and other health complications. With damaged infrastructure, access to healthcare has become nearly impossible for many, leading to fears of worsening conditions.

For many employees at Impact Plastics and families of the missing, the tragedy is compounded by the need for answers and accountability. A sense of injustice permeates the community as survivors frame this narrative of heartbreak and anger, calling for changes and improvements to workplace safety regulations. Questions remain about how a company could prioritize production over the health and safety of its workforce.

With continuing investigations, support from local officials is being sought as bereaved families navigate their grief. The loss of lives during Hurricane Helene has not only left physical scars across landscapes but emotional ones as well, leading to urgent conversations about labor practices and emergency preparedness protocols. Only time will tell how Erwin and other afflicted areas will rebuild and emerge from these devastating floods.

The storm has become one of the deadliest hurricanes, claiming over 150 lives across multiple states, and reveals the larger conversation about the need for communities to be prepared for such disasters. The tragic events at Impact Plastics serve as both sorrowful chapters and wake-up calls for many, emphasizing the importance of safety and responsibility during calamities like Hurricane Helene.
