A Home Office deportation worker, Gary Costin, was dismissed from his job after sharing a post by Reform UK MP Richard Tice on WhatsApp. The incident has sparked a significant debate about free speech and workplace policies, particularly concerning discrimination claims.

In April 2024, Mr. Costin, a 57-year-old veteran of the Home Office with 15 years of service through contractors G4S and Mitie, forwarded a post from Tice following a GB News article that raised eyebrows. The article, titled "How Home Office Islamic Network Aims to Recruit Muslim Staff and Influence Policymakers from the Inside," revealed documents suggesting a group of more than 700 civil servants were focused on making government policy more inclusive of Muslim perspectives.

After sharing a screenshot of Tice’s post with the simple caption "Uh oh," Costin found himself in the middle of a storm. The next day, he was suspended after an anonymous complaint filed through Mitie's whistleblowing hotline claimed that his action constituted spreading hatred. This whistleblower described Costin’s forwarded message as an insult to their Muslim colleagues and accused him of bullying.

The post by Tice read, "SHOCKING REVELATIONS: Large Islamic Network inside Home Office, now suspended, appears to have been deliberately undermining government policy. How many other departments have similar? Answers needed urgently. Possible national security issues at stake." This comment led to a severe backlash against Costin.

During a disciplinary hearing, Mitie acknowledged that Costin had not intended to cause upset. However, they argued that the image could be perceived as offensive or racist. Consequently, he was dismissed, leading to significant personal consequences.

Mr. Costin expressed his profound distress over losing everything due to this incident, saying, "I have lost almost everything. I have nothing whatsoever against Muslims. It was a purely factual message on a small WhatsApp group we used to share information relevant to our work." The psychological toll on him following his termination was severe; he reported experiencing depression and marital strain as a direct result of the fallout.

"It’s been hard. I lost my job. I had a decent car, which I’ve had to sell to keep my head above water. I could have lost my home. A year on, I am still devastated. I never intended to cause any offense to anyone," he told TalkTV.

According to the latest figures, there were 18,220 civil servants in the UK identifying as Muslim as of last year, while 166,140 cited Christianity as their religion within the service.
