The 33rd Finale of the Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy (WOŚP) was once again a resounding success, collecting over 178 million PLN across 24 countries, with Biedronka leading the fundraising charge by generating 5.75 million PLN through donations and product sales.
Biedronka, the main sponsor of the event, reported the impressive sum raised during the charity campaign, with funds directed primarily to pediatric oncology and hematology. These proceeds came from various special products like hats, gloves, and thermos mugs sold at their stores, with all profits, after VAT, allocated to support children's medical needs.
This year’s fundraising event came with its own set of celebrations and acknowledgments, particularly notable was the support shown through online auctions, still underway until February 9 and 10, which are expected to increase the total funds collected. According to Portal Spożywczy, the entirety of the amount reflected the generous spirit of customers who purchased the red heart products symbolizing the campaign.
The 2024 fundraising efforts continued the storied tradition of WOŚP, which has been operational for years, attracting involvement from various public figures and community members alike. Annual efforts have culminated not just funding but also communal engagement, with the total contributions from Biedronka adding up to nearly 27 million PLN over the past four years, underscoring its commitment to the cause.
Reflecting on local efforts, the Gostyń region collected 677,217.52 PLN this year, which, though lower than the previous year’s figure of around 740,000 PLN, still marked significant involvement from the community. Mirosław Sobkowiak, head of the WOŚP team in Gostyń, remarked, “Przypomnę, że w naszym powiecie WOŚP gra już po raz 34., co jest absolutnym rekordem.” His words encapsulate the enduring spirit of the event, emphasizing how such charitable initiatives have taken root and become tradition within local communities.
The atmosphere at events celebrating the fundraising efforts was positive, with volunteers and organizers gathering to reflect on their achievements. The local WOŚP teams have evolved remarkably, branching out from the first annual concert to numerous active participation frameworks involving schools, clubs, and organizations. Sebstian Nowak, who played a key role during the inaugural Gostyń event, noted the increasing interest and engagement, stating, “Cieszy nas, że mimo lat formuła WOŚP nadal przyciąga ludzi, a mieszkańcy powiatu gostyńskiego wciąż chętnie pomagają.”
This year, celebrity participation added another dynamic to the fundraising results. Robert Lewandowski was among those who drew the public's interest by auctioning off exclusive experiences including tickets to see Barcelona play, which concluded at a staggering final bid of 272,000 PLN. This highlighted not only Lewandowski's contribution but also the widespread interest from sports figures such as Iga Świątek and Rafael Nadal, who have also participated actively.
Ongoing popularity for such auctions reflects not only the appeal of merchandise but demonstrates how support can come from diverse avenues, binding communities through shared causes. Lewandowski’s auction showcased this well and continued his history of supporting WOŚP with past contributions including signed jerseys. Such active participation undoubtedly appeals to younger generations, fostering involvement through role models who set the stage for community engagement.
While the total fundraising amount sees minor fluctuations from year to year, the underlying reason for these contributions remains constant. Every effort, no matter the amount, aims at enhancing the health and wellbeing of children. Behavioral trends like school breaks can impact fundraising levels, as Sobkowiak explained: “Kwota jest nieco niższa niż w roku ubiegłym. Można ją wytłumaczyć tym, że były ferie.” Still, the efforts made resonate beyond mere numbers, showcasing the determination to keep supporting local healthcare.
The essence of the WOŚP transcends financial figures; it embodies community spirit, togetherness, and compassion. The contributions made, both large and small, accumulate and create significant change, as properly noted by volunteers expressing, “To niesamowite uczucie być częścią czegoś tak wielkiego.” Gratitude is owed to everyone, volunteers and donors alike who enabled this charitable spectacle to continue thriving.
This year’s results showcased not only the resilience of the fundraising efforts but also the love and concern shared by people wanting to make positive differences. With each passing year, the legacy of the Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy continues toward amplifying its impact, ensuring medical resources are equipped to meet the needs of society's most vulnerable.
