A Shanghai resident was scammed after following instructions from someone posing as bank staff.

A woman from Shanghai, identified as Ms. Cuong, found herself embroiled in a bizarre situation after mistakenly transferring 80,000 NDT (over 280 million VND) to the wrong account. The incident unfolded when Ms. Cuong attempted to pay the deposit for her new home back in December 2024, but her efforts went awry when the money landed not where intended, but instead with one Mr. Huynh.

Concerned about the unintended transfer, she attempted to reach out to the recipient with the hope of retrieving her funds. After waiting for two days without any response, she decided to take her predicament to social media, sharing her experience and praying for the stranger to see her appeal and return the funds.

Just half an hour later, Ms. Cuong received what she thought was fortunate news: a phone call from someone purporting to be a bank employee. The caller assured her they were aware of her situation and requested sensitive details, including her ATM card number and other personal information. Trusting the caller, who promised to resolve her issue within the hour, Ms. Cuong shared her data.

Not long after, excitement turned to horror when she checked her banking app to discover not the refund of her 80,000 NDT but rather a shocking deduction of 300,000 NDT (more than 1 billion VND) instead. Distraught, she rushed to her bank, demanding answers and assistance.

Upon recounting her story, the bank staff quickly realized the grim reality: the caller was not affiliated with the bank but was rather someone engaged in fraudulent activity. The bank informed Ms. Cuong they could not be held liable for the loss, as it stemmed from her compliance with the fraudster's guidance.

Recognizing the severity of the situation, the bank's representatives indicated they would collaborate with local authorities to investigate. The police swiftly took this matter seriously, opening up an investigation and managing to identify the fraudster within just 24 hours.

During their interrogation, the suspect admitted to the crime and outlined how they operated, which led to legal actions against them and their accomplices. Luckily for Ms. Cuong, she was able to reclaim the 300,000 NDT as the funds were recovered thanks to the speed of the police response. Meanwhile, the bank also stepped up their efforts to help her trace the original 280 million VND transfer.

"Customers must directly contact us when money transfer errors occur," highlighted the local police, reminding individuals to be cautious and verify calls or communications related to their banking details.
