Winterlude 2025 Festival Kicks Off Amid Chilly Celebrations

Winter activities abound as the festival opens with music, skating, and cultural events across Ottawa.

The 2025 Winterlude Festival officially kicks off this weekend, bringing the beauty and excitement of winter to Ottawa and Gatineau once again. Celebrated for showcasing the finest of Canadian winter culture, this year’s festival promises both locals and tourists alike plenty of activities to indulge in as the chill of January sets the stage.

The festival launches on Friday, January 31, 2025, and will continue through February 17, inviting everyone to experience the magic of winter. A myriad of events are slated to take place, particularly concentrated on Sparks Street, the ByWard Market, and the Snowflake Kingdom located at Jacques-Cartier Park. Alongside traditional winter attractions such as ice sculptures, festival-goers can skate on the renowned Rideau Canal, which remains open throughout the celebrations.

According to CTVNewsOttawa.ca, "It's the opening weekend of Winterlude, celebrating the best the Canadian winter has to offer." This year’s festival aims to create vibrant, joyous moments, with activities ranging from spectacular ice sculptures to live performances and culinary delights.

On Sparks Street, the festivities kick off with the Winterlude Opening Night, which features DJs spinning music and vibrant animations paired with looping presentations of LuX, the festival's new sound and light experience. Vendors will also be present, offering delectable food options to fuel the eclectic atmosphere.

For those who enjoy live music, the Ottawa Winter Jazz Festival coincides with Winterlude, showcasing local and national talent across multiple performances on Friday and Saturday at the Ottawa Arts Court. The festival highlights artists such as Juno Award winner Caity Gyorgy and provides something for every jazz enthusiast.

Adding to the celebration, the Winter Celebration at Rideau Hall will invite the public to enjoy outdoor activities including skating on Canada’s oldest outdoor rink. With activities scheduled from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, attendees can expect guided tours of the historic residence and warm up at the Winter Pavilion.

Environment Canada forecasts chilly temperatures over the weekend, with lows dipping to -20°C, making it feel even colder with wind chill. Yet, as the weather adds to the winter wonderland vibe, it is sure to draw out crowds ready to partake.

On Saturday, expect clear skies and optimum conditions for skating on the Rideau Canal, where all 7.8 kilometers will be open between Rideau Street and Dow’s Lake. Equipment rentals will be available at Capital Skates, perfect for those who want to glide across the ice without their own pair. And, of course, no winter festival would be complete without the famed BeaverTails stands serving warm, sugary pastries to enjoy after skating.

For families, the activities extend to workshops and craft markets. The Love is in the Air Valentine's Craft Market will run on Saturday at the Glebe Community Centre, providing attendees with the chance to embrace the upcoming Valentine's Day by browsing creations from over 50 local vendors.

Sunday offers more entertainment with the Grand Lunar New Year Parade hosted by Ottawa Chinatown, celebrating the Year of the Snake with traditional music, dances, and colorful costumes flowing through the streets from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. This event promises to enrich the festival experience through cultural engagement.

Despite the cold temperatures, Winterlude promises to be anything but ordinary. Attendees can look forward to diverse experiences throughout the festival, whether it's the arts-infused Ottawa Winter Jazz Festival or the family-friendly activities at the Snowflake Kingdom. Importantly, each element of Winterlude fosters community engagement, reminding everyone why winter is such a cherished season.

The Winterlude Festival not only spotlights the artistic and culinary talents of Ottawa and Gatineau but also strengthens community bonds across the region. With ample opportunities to embrace the cold and engage with local culture, there’s no reason to stay indoors this weekend.
