As winter weather continues to grip several regions of Romania, authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution while traveling on snow-covered roads. On April 10, 2025, traffic on all county roads in Harghita and national roads crossing mountain passes is occurring under winter conditions due to recent snowfall. The executive director of the Technical Department within the Harghita County Council, Adrian Chiorean, confirmed that snow removal operations are actively in place. "We have a snow removal contract in effect, and snow removal machines are constantly working on all county roads," Chiorean stated.
Heavy snowfall has resulted in challenging driving conditions across various roads. Chiorean noted that in areas experiencing heavy snowfall, machines are working to clear the roads, and once the snowfall slows, anti-slip material will be spread to ensure safer driving conditions. He emphasized the importance of drivers being equipped for winter and advised them to drive carefully. "During the weather warnings issued by ANM, drivers must be cautious on the road, as traffic is occurring under winter conditions," he added.
Traffic is particularly difficult on several national roads, including DN 15 Toplița-Borsec, DN 12 C between Gheorgheni and Lacu Roșu, DN 12A Miercurea-Ciuc -Lunca de Sus, and DN 13 B in Bucin Pass. The Harghita County Police Inspectorate (IPJ Harghita) has announced that traffic restrictions have been imposed on DN 13 B in Bucin Pass for vehicles with a maximum authorized mass of over 7.5 tons. "We are constantly acting with snow removal equipment and anti-slip materials to maintain the road in optimal traffic conditions," the IPJ Harghita stated.
In addition to Harghita, the State Road Administration reported that snow conditions persist in the northern regions of Moldova, specifically in Soroca, Briceni, Edineț, and Șoldănești. Road workers in these areas are also monitoring national routes and intervening with anti-skid material as necessary. A Yellow Code for frosts and strong winds has been issued by the State Hydrometeorological Service (SHS), valid until April 13, 2025.
In the central part of Romania, particularly in the counties of Brașov, Covasna, and Mureș, traffic is hindered due to heavy snowfall and blizzards. Restrictions for heavy vehicles have been implemented on several road sections in mountainous areas. The Covasna Police Inspectorate (IPJ Covasna) has reported that due to adverse weather conditions, traffic restrictions are in place for vehicles exceeding 3.5 tons on DN11 and DN 2D, particularly from Târgu Secuiesc towards the counties of Bacău and Vrancea. A TIR was reported to be blocked on DN2D in the Ojdula area, affecting traffic in both directions.
Traffic resumed under winter conditions around 16:00 on April 10, 2025, but the situation remains precarious. Additionally, a military trailer was reported to be blocked on DN1 at Timișul de Sus, further complicating the travel situation in the area. Tudor Duțu, head of the Brașov Regional Road and Bridge Directorate, confirmed that efforts are ongoing to ensure road safety.
Meanwhile, in Bistrița-Năsăud, traffic is also occurring under winter conditions on DN 17, Pasul Tihuța, where road teams are actively using snow removal equipment. The county is under two Yellow Weather Warnings, with the first warning concerning wind intensification, blizzard conditions, and snow cover, effective until 23:00 on April 10, 2025. The second warning is in effect until 06:00 on Saturday, April 12, 2025, focusing on snowfall and blizzard conditions in mountainous areas.
As weather forecasts predict continued winter conditions, authorities are urging all drivers to remain vigilant. "We maintain constant communication with field teams for prompt intervention where necessary. We recommend drivers to exercise caution, adjust their speed according to road conditions, and ensure their vehicles are properly equipped for the winter season," the IPJ Harghita advised.
As the winter weather continues to impact travel conditions across various regions, it is essential for drivers to heed warnings and take necessary precautions to ensure safety on the roads. The combination of heavy snowfall, strong winds, and freezing temperatures poses significant risks, and authorities are working diligently to maintain road safety and facilitate travel wherever possible.
