Winnipeg Blue Bombers Release Veteran Receiver Drew Wolitarsky

The long-time player concludes his seven-season career amid injury concerns and roster adjustments.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have officially parted ways with Canadian-American receiver Drew Wolitarsky, marking the end of his impressive seven-season tenure with the team. The announcement was made on January 27, 2025, as the team navigates through difficult roster decisions stemming from player performance and injury concerns.

Wolitarsky, 29, logged 33 receptions for 403 yards and one touchdown over 10 regular-season games during the 2024 season. His departure follows his injury-plagued performance, which saw him miss significant playing time. General manager Kyle Walters commented on the tough choice to release Wolitarsky, stating, "These decisions are always difficult and it’s especially true with a player who has been with us for so long."

Drafted by the Blue Bombers in the 2017 CFL Supplemental Draft, Wolitarsky's influence on the team proved to be immense. The receiver, who is originally from Santa Clarita, California, qualified for Canadian citizenship and quickly made his mark on the franchise. Over his career, he amassed impressive statistics, totaling 227 catches, 2,954 receiving yards, and 18 touchdowns across 96 regular-season games, underlining his role as one of the team's reliable offensive options.

Part of Wolitarsky's legacy with the Bombers includes being instrumental in the team's back-to-back Grey Cup victories in 2019 and 2021. His work ethic, reliability, and chemistry with teammates earned him respect and popularity within the locker room. Walters noted his invaluable contribution, saying, "Drew has been a solid contributor for the team, was popular in the locker room, and was instrumental in two Grey Cup championships, and for this, the franchise is forever grateful."

During the 2024 season, injuries limited Wolitarsky's availability and impacted his performance on the field. Despite his struggles, his best season came just the year prior, where he recorded 47 receptions for 668 yards and six touchdowns, showcasing the talent and potential he had during his career.

Wolitarsky made his feelings known following the announcement of his release through his personal Instagram account, stating, "I found out this morning I am being released from Winnipeg. I’m still just trying to wrap my mind around this, to be honest with you. I’m having a hard time believing it. To get the call was definitely heartbreaking for me." This emotional response reflects the bond he formed with the team and the challenges of leaving behind a significant chapter of his life.

The timing of the release was strategic, with Wolitarsky reportedly due for a five-figure offseason roster bonus by February 1, 2025. This move enables the team to navigate their salary cap more effectively as they prepare for the CFL Free Agency period officially opening on February 11, 2025.

Wolitarsky’s career serves as both inspiration and a lesson in resilience for many aspiring athletes. His grit, determination, and ability to succeed against the odds will surely open new opportunities for him moving forward. Whether he remains within the CFL or explores other football avenues, his impact on the Blue Bombers will be remembered fondly by fans and teammates alike.

The Blue Bombers now face the future with the task of filling the gap left by Wolitarsky and finding new talent to strengthen their roster for the upcoming season. While Drew Wolitarsky's time with the Bombers has come to a bittersweet conclusion, his legacy within the team is firmly established and celebrated.
