Windstar Cruises Expands Mediterranean Voyages Amid Market Demand

Unique itineraries and year-round presence demonstrate Windstar's commitment to enhancing the cruise experience

In an exciting move that showcases resilience in the cruise industry, Windstar Cruises has announced plans to expand its winter presence in the Mediterranean, following a successful inaugural season. What began as a necessary pivot from planned Middle Eastern itineraries due to geopolitical disturbances has blossomed into a long-term commitment to winter sailings in one of the world's most beloved cruising destinations. With high demand and positive guest feedback, Windstar is set to operate its Star Legend ship for at least the 2024/2025 winter season, featuring five distinct itineraries.

Windstar's chief commercial officer, Janet Bava, expressed enthusiasm about the company's first-ever winter deployment in the Mediterranean. The shift was prompted by the cancellation of Star Legend's initial Middle East cruises after heightened tensions in the region. Instead of navigating through the UAE and Oman, the ship is now sailing in the picturesque waters between Barcelona and Rome, a change that guests seem to have thoroughly welcomed. Bava noted, "On our inaugural sailing in December, every single travel advisor and guest on board told me 'this is genius' as we enjoyed the sunny weather of Europe’s most walkable cities when few cruise lines sail Europe’s oceans."

The Mediterranean promises vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and a diverse array of ports that mingle history with hospitality. For winter 2024 and beyond, Star Legend will embark on voyages that not only traverse iconic cities like Rome, Naples, and Athens but will also feature unique experiences such as stays in Corfu and Taormina. These changes cater to a variety of interests and foster an immersive experience that only a small-ship cruise can provide. This expansion into the Mediterranean marks Windstar's first step into offering year-round sailings within this region, which now complements the existing summer voyages of three other ships in the fleet, Wind Surf, Wind Star, and Wind Spirit. However, Star Legend will return to the Scandinavian routes after the winter season wrapping up only on spring 2025.

Among the new itineraries, the "Winter in Italy and the Adriatic" takes guests from Athens to Rome over eight days, featuring enchanting stops such as Delphi and an overnight in Corfu. In a particularly festive touch, the ship will also offer holiday-specific cruises in December, adding to its appeal for winter vacationers looking to celebrate in the Mediterranean's warm embrace. One such cruise is set to sail from Rome to Barcelona, including an overnight in the charming Italian city of Livorno, allowing passengers to participate in Christmas Eve mass at Florence’s iconic Duomo.

As traveler preferences evolve, cruise lines like Windstar are increasingly leaning towards creating special, tailored experiences. With cruising becoming more than just a means of travel but a transformational experience, Windstar's initiative aims to provide a cultural and educational component through local experiences and guided tours at each port of call.
