William R. Bennett Bridge Closed Due To Police Incident

Emergency response triggered by man threatening explosives leads to extensive detours

The William R. Bennett Bridge, a key corridor linking Kelowna and West Kelowna, has been closed indefinitely due to a police incident involving explosives. The closure, which began early this morning, is expected to last several hours as authorities manage the situation.

According to the Kelowna RCMP, officers responded to the incident around 3:45 AM when they received reports of an individual parked across the eastbound lanes of the bridge. This individual is believed to have started a fire inside their vehicle, prompting police to take immediate action.

Speaking to the media, Cpl. Michael Gauthier of the Kelowna RCMP stated, "The bridge is closed in both directions right now...expect the bridge to be closed for several hours, please make alternate driving arrangements in the meantime." Cpl. Gauthier confirmed the individual involved was assessed as being "in crisis" and was safely takeninto custody following the incident.

Further complicifying the situation, the police called for the assistance of the Lower Mainland Explosives Disposal Unit to assess and manage the parked vehicle. Concerns were raised about possible explosives, which caused Mounties to act decisively and close off both lanes.

Witnesses at the scene described the chaotic moments leading to the closure. One witness recalled seeing the vehicle, identified as a white van, parked horizontally across the bridge, effectively blocking traffic. "I could see smoke coming from inside the van, and soon after, police began breaking windows," the witness reported. "They told us to move away from our vehicles because of the potential for explosives. It was pretty intense."

Motorists were advised to seek alternative routes, with many turning to Westside Road or Vernon to navigate around the bridge closure. The disruption has resulted in significant traffic delays as the only connection between West Kelowna and Kelowna is now cut off.

Local authorities reiterated the importance of public safety, emphasizing their careful approach to handling the situation. "Once we deem the vehicle is safe, it will be removed and the highway will be reopened," Cpl. Gauthier explained.

The situation has prompted not only delays but also increased police presence around the area, with officers directing traffic on nearby routes. Those impacted have been encouraged to stay updated via local news outlets as the situation continues to develop.

While the bridge remains closed, alternative transport options have begun to emerge. Notably, Valhalla Helicopters is offering shuttle services across Okanagan Lake for those who urgently need to travel between Kelowna and West Kelowna, highlighting the community's adaptability and response to emergency situations.

This incident draws attention to the larger conversations about mental health and the resources available for individuals experiencing crises. The RCMP's response indicates awareness of these sensitive situations, particularly as they relate to public safety.

The bridge incident serves as a stark reminder of the unforeseen situations communities can face and the pivotal role of law enforcement agencies during such moments. Traffic updates and safety information will be provided as new details emerge from the investigation and bridge re-opening efforts.
