Widespread UPI Outage Disrupts Digital Payments Across India

The National Payments Corporation of India faces ongoing technical issues, leaving users frustrated and unable to transact.

Digital transactions across India faced significant disruptions on Saturday, April 12, 2025, as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) experienced a widespread outage. Users reported being unable to complete payments on popular platforms such as Google Pay, Paytm, and PhonePe, marking this as the third major outage in just a month.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) confirmed the issue, stating they are dealing with "intermittent technical issues" that have led to partial declines in UPI transactions. In a post on social media platform X, the NPCI expressed their commitment to resolving the matter, saying, "NPCI is currently facing intermittent technical issues, leading to partial UPI transaction declines. We are working to resolve the issue, and will keep you updated. We regret the inconvenience caused." This statement was echoed by many frustrated users online, who took to social media to share their experiences.

The outage reportedly began around 11:26 AM, peaking at approximately 11:40 AM, with over 222 reports of failed transactions logged on Downdetector, a website that tracks service outages. By the afternoon, the number of complaints had surged to around 1,168, indicating the scale of the disruption. Users expressed their frustrations, with some calling for better communication from NPCI regarding planned outages.

Previously, on March 26, 2025, a similar disruption occurred, lasting nearly three hours and affecting thousands of users. That incident prompted complaints from over 3,000 users, as many were unable to access their accounts or complete transactions. In the days following, on April 2, another outage was reported, attributed to fluctuations in bank success rates that caused increased latency within the UPI network.

UPI, which allows users to send and receive money instantly via their phone numbers or unique UPI IDs, has become a cornerstone of India's digital payment ecosystem. In January 2025 alone, UPI transactions surpassed 16.99 billion, with a total value exceeding ₹23.48 lakh crore, a record high for any month. The Finance Ministry emphasized the importance of UPI, stating it contributes to 80 percent of retail payments across the country.

Despite its growing popularity, the recent spate of outages raises concerns about the reliability of the UPI system. Users have expressed their discontent, with some even sharing memes about the situation, highlighting the frustration many feel when they are unable to complete transactions. One user humorously remarked, "UPI is down again today, all payments are getting failed. At least there should be prior intimation sent in case of planned outage." Another added, "I was not carrying cash and this downtime placed me in an awkward situation while paying fare to auto wala. Please, we need a zero-downtime UPI infra."

As the NPCI continues to work on stabilizing the system, many users are left wondering how such outages can be prevented in the future. The consistent issues have led to discussions about the need for better infrastructure and communication from payment service providers. With digital payments becoming an integral part of daily life in India, ensuring the reliability of UPI is paramount.
