WHITEHAVEN Rugby League is set to honor one of its own, Des Byrne, with a dedication day this Saturday, January 25, aptly celebrated as 'Mr Whitehaven RLFC.' This day aims to pay tribute to the stalwart of the club, whose unwavering loyalty and contributions have left an indelible mark on both the team and the local community.
The announcement was made by the club via social media this week, emphasizing the significance of the occasion. Last Sunday, during the clash against Workington Town, fans and players gathered to lay wreaths at the ground, commemorated by the victory of Whitehaven RL winning the Ike Southward Trophy. A post shared on social media articulated, "This Saturday we are dedicting the day to Mr Whitehaven RLFC Des Byrne. We laid some wreaths for Des last Sunday to give the Town lads who played for us last season the opportunity to pay their respects but we think Des deserves a full day dedicated to him."
The excitement surrounding the event is palpable, as the club expressed, "You can see how much Des meant to everyone reading the lovely comments from supporters, rivals, and players left on the last post about Des." This sentiment reflects the deep connections established over the years. It’s more than just about honoring him; it’s about celebrating the spirit of community he instilled within the club.
Des’s family has been invited to the Garry Purdham suite as special guests for the event, highlighting the close-knit fabric of the Whitehaven Rugby League family. The players are also rallying behind this tribute, determined to give their all for Des. "The lads want to win this game for Des and are going to give 110% to try and win on Saturday," the club added, anticipating enthusiastic crowds to join the cheer and pay their respects.
Attendees can expect to participate not only by applauding but also by observing a minute’s silence to reflect on Byrne’s life and legacy, alongside the wreath laying. Despite the somber undertone, the day aims to capture the joy and camaraderie Des brought to everybody around him.
The club previously stated, "Des was and forever will be part of this great club. He’s unwavering loyalty to all things Whitehaven shone through at any opportunity." This dedication is not just about remembrance but also about affirming the values and loyalty Des collectively represented.
Tributes have poured from various quarters, with former players and coaches expressing their sentiments about Des. Jonty Gorley, who once managed the team, shared fond memories, saying, "I got on with him like a house on fire right from the start. You couldn't help but get on with Des; he's the type of fella who just wants to help. He had a great sense of humor - he used to skit me all the time about my voice notes being five or six minutes long." Gorley recalled how Des's vibrant personality and his penchant for humor left lasting impressions on all who knew him.
Former player and coach Kyle Amor also paid homage to the stalwart, remarking, "Des was one of those who had multiple roles at the club; he has devoted his whole life to the club really. There aren't many left like him." Such words resonate with many at Whitehaven, where loyalty and dedication are the true hallmarks of the club's identity.
With the legacy of Des Byrne at the forefront, the upcoming Saturday promises not just to be another match day but a heartfelt gathering to honor and cherish the life’s work of one of their own. The community’s desire to show up, cheer on the team, and celebrate Des mirrors the essence of what it means to be part of Whitehaven Rugby League. This dedication day stands as a symbol of belonging and gratitude, ensuring Des’s memory lives on for future generations.
