Westown Smart City Development Launches First Phase Today

The opening of Westown Square marks a new economic hub for Durban's Outer West region.

In a significant milestone for the region, the Westown smart city development in Shongweni, just outside Durban, officially launched its first phase on Thursday, March 27, 2025, with the opening of the highly anticipated Westown Square shopping mall. This innovative mixed-use development aims to transform the area into a bustling economic hub along the N3 corridor between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, often referred to as the "Midrand of KZN" by its developers, Fundamentum Property Group.

Spanning approximately 50,000 square meters, Westown Square is designed to offer a unique blend of shopping, dining, and entertainment experiences. At its heart lies The Barn, a striking barn-shaped structure that will serve as a vibrant high-street market. Here, visitors can explore a curated selection of artisanal homeware, art, fashion, beauty products, and a variety of dining options, making it a prime destination for both locals and tourists.

"This is just the first phase of a larger mixed-use development that will include a residential estate, hospital, commercial parks, and more," said Gugu Sisilana, spokesperson for the eThekwini Municipality. The development is expected to generate around R15 billion in investment over the next 10 to 15 years and create an impressive 23,000 jobs, significantly boosting the local economy.

As part of this ambitious project, Balwin Properties is investing R2 billion into the Shongweni Eco Park, a residential development that will consist of 1,260 apartments built over 20 phases. This lifestyle estate will feature amenities such as a fully equipped training science gym, a children’s play area, a swimming pool, and concierge services, enhancing the quality of life for future residents.

Westown is not only focused on residential and retail spaces; it also aims to establish a diverse ecosystem that includes logistics, healthcare, warehousing, and tourism opportunities. The Farrier Business Park is set to emerge as a key logistics and warehousing hotspot, while Parc Ferme will cater to motor enthusiasts with its commercial offerings.

The eThekwini Municipality is also playing a crucial role in supporting this development, having allocated approximately R600 million to enhance bulk infrastructure, including roads, water supply, wastewater management, and electricity. This investment is essential for ensuring that Westown can accommodate the anticipated growth and influx of residents and visitors.

The excitement surrounding the opening of Westown Square is palpable, with local residents expressing optimism about the job opportunities it will create. Simphiwe Ngema, a resident of Shongweni Village, shared his enthusiasm: "Everything is positive. Many young people have found job opportunities, and we believe this mall will greatly benefit both the community and the surrounding areas."

Furthermore, organizations like 1000 Hills Tourism South Africa have welcomed the new shopping and lifestyle destination, emphasizing its potential to enhance the retail landscape in the Valley of 1000 Hills. "We extend a warm 1000 Hills welcome to Westown. They’re set to lead the way in retail experiences, with a world-class shopping environment that blends indoor and outdoor spaces, reflecting the natural beauty of the Shongweni green belt," they stated.

As the first phase of Westown opens its doors, all eyes are on the future developments planned for this ambitious project. With an integrated approach to urban planning, Westown is poised to become a model for smart city developments in South Africa, combining economic growth with community-focused amenities.

The opening of Westown Square marks a significant step forward in the realization of a vision that aims to redefine the urban landscape of KwaZulu-Natal. As the region continues to evolve, the potential for Westown to emerge as a central hub for economic activity and community engagement is not just a dream; it is now a tangible reality.
