Wesley Sonck and Virginie Van Mol Tie the Knot
Former football player Wesley Sonck (46) wed his long-time partner Virginie Van Mol (46) on Friday afternoon, December 20, 2024, at the historic town hall of Ninove, Belgium. The couple’s wedding came just three months after they announced their engagement and was attended by 150 guests.
Sonck and Van Mol, who have been together for eight years, decided to have their wedding during the festive Christmas season to create a special sense of togetherness. Virginie dazzled in her glamorous white dress, with Wesley opting for a classic black tuxedo.
Breaking from tradition, the couple chose to forego witnesses at their ceremony. "We didn't feel the need for official witnesses," Virginie explained. "If you ask one person, the other might feel left out, and what matters for us is our love for each other." This decision highlighted the couple's preference for personal meaning over traditional customs.
Following their exchange of vows, the newlyweds celebrated their nuptials with a reception and dinner at Krekelhof in nearby Gooik, where guests enjoyed the evening festivities which featured the opening song "Hungry Eyes" by Eric Carmen.
Originally, Virginie had envisioned exchanging vows in Italy; the choice for Belgium was made to maintain the closeness with their families. Together, they have formed a blended family, raising five children—two from Virginie's previous relationship and three from Wesley's past marriage.
Wesley, who has left his mark on the football world, was honored as the 'Ereburger' (Honorary Citizen) of Ninove by Mayor Tania De Jonge two years prior, reflecting his beloved status within the community. Sonck is also well-known on television, regularly appearing as a football analyst.
Despite the public interest surrounding their marriage, Virginie noted some challenges the couple faces due to their busy careers. "We often live beside each other rather than together," she admitted, highlighting the realities of their professional lives. "We might spend only a few evenings together on the sofa each month, and sometimes I hear about his week only when he talks about it with his friends on weekends. It can be tough."
Yet, both remain committed to nurturing their relationship. Virginie shared, "I admire Wesley for his many talents. He’s physically and mentally strong and deeply caring toward me," adding, "Although he’s not very romantic, he shows me how much he loves me at unexpected times."
The couple's wedding was not only a personal milestone but also underscored their desire for unity and celebration during this festive season. They expressed hopes for continued happiness and love as they navigate both their family life and the pressures of their careers.
