Werder Bremen Triumphs 2-0 Over St. Pauli

Derrick Köhn and Marvin Ducksch secure away victory for the Green and Whites.

Werder Bremen secured a convincing 2-0 victory against FC St. Pauli at the Millerntor-Stadion, marking their fourth away win of the season. The match, held on December 14, 2024, showcased the resilience of the Green and Whites as they climbed to seventh place on the Bundesliga table.

The contest began with Werder Bremen asserting themselves early on. Derrick Köhn opened the scoreline midway through the first half, netting the ball after receiving an expertly placed through ball from Marco Grüll. With precision, Köhn took one touch and unleashed his shot, finding the far corner to put his team up 1-0 by the 24th minute.

Despite falling behind, FC St. Pauli sought to regain control after suffering defeat to Bayer Leverkusen just days earlier. Yet, their efforts were thwarted by Werder's steadfast defense, which held firm against St. Pauli’s attempts to equalize.

After the halftime break, Werder Bremen continued their dominance. Just nine minutes after the restart, Marvin Ducksch extended the lead to 2-0. He capitalized on a long ball from Mitchell Weiser, driving the ball home from near the post. Ducksch’s goal at the 54th minute showcased the attacking prowess of the visitors, leaving St. Pauli struggling for answers.

St. Pauli attempted to respond, introducing substitutions to revive their hope for comeback. Notably, the manager called upon players like Ritzka, Albers, Ahlstrand, and Maurides. Although they pressed forward with determination, the scoreboard remained unchanged as the clock wound down.

On the other hand, Werder also made tactical adjustments, bringing on players like Oliver Burke, Pieper, Olivier Deman, and Skelly Alvero to maintain their advantage and control the tempo of the game. Both teams saw caution from the referee, with five yellow cards issued throughout the match: two to St. Pauli’s Danel Sinani and Eric Smith, and three to Werder Bremen’s Stark, Friedl, and Jens Stage.

When the final whistle blew, Werder Bremen emerged victorious, lifting their spirits significantly and positioning them for the upcoming rounds of the Bundesliga, where they would face Union Berlin next. Meanwhile, FC St. Pauli, now sitting 15th on the table, will seek to bounce back against Stuttgart, hoping to reclaim their form and climb out of the relegation zone.

This match stands as a pivotal moment for both sides, setting the tone for their future clashes as they navigate the pressures of Bundesliga play.
