Wendy Cocchia Sworn In As British Columbia's New Lieutenant-Governor

Premier David Eby praises Cocchia's lifelong leadership and dedication to community service during her swearing-in ceremony.

Wendy Cocchia has officially taken office as British Columbia's new lieutenant-governor, marking her as the province's 31st individual to assume this ceremonial role. The swearing-in ceremony held at the B.C. Parliament buildings on January 30, 2025, showcased not only Cocchia's commitment to public service but also the heartfelt appreciation and support from community members and officials.

During the ceremony, which was attended by family, friends, Indigenous leaders, and members of the legislature, Premier David Eby introduced Cocchia, highlighting her lifelong leadership and dedication to community service. "Wendy Cocchia's lifelong leadership and dedication to community service sets an example for everyone," Eby stated, underscoring the values and qualities expected from the new lieutenant-governor.

One of Cocchia's initial responsibilities as lieutenant-governor involved inspecting a 50-person Guard of Honour, which was provided by Maritime Forces Pacific and Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt. The atmosphere was heightened as the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy performed The Viceregal Salute, featuring the stirring notes of God Save the King followed by O Canada. Complementing this display of tradition, artillery troops from the 5th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, conducted a ceremonial 15-gun salute.

Cocchia succeeds Janet Austin, who spent nearly seven years serving as lieutenant-governor. Austin's farewell ceremony took place just the day before, on January 29, and was marked by expressions of gratitude for her service and dedication to the province.

The new lieutenant-governor's appointment signals not just continuity but also the prospect of new initiatives and perspectives for British Columbia. Cocchia, known for her achievements as a businesswoman and philanthropist, is expected to integrate her expertise and passion for community-focused initiatives during her tenure.

Celebrations surrounding Cocchia's swearing-in have invoked optimism about the future of the lieutenant-governor's office and its potential to impact the community positively. With her background and experiences, many hope she will continue to uphold the high standards set by her predecessor and explore innovative ways to serve the citizens of British Columbia.

Wendy Cocchia's swearing-in as lieutenant-governor is not just another ceremony; it marks the beginning of her commitment to serving British Columbia during times of challenge and growth. The province looks forward to seeing how she will shape her role and work closely with both the legislature and community members to advance initiatives reflective of their needs and aspirations.

While it is customary for the lieutenant-governor to play a largely ceremonial role, the individual often possesses the opportunity to influence significant developments within the community. Wendy Cocchia’s wealth of experience and dedication to philanthropic causes suggest she will use her platform to address important societal issues.

The community welcomes the new lieutenant-governor, entrusting her with the responsibilities and privileges of the role. The future of British Columbia under her watch is anticipated with hope, as Cocchia embarks on this prestigious new chapter of her public service career.
