Week-long Vacation Changes Affect Aguascalientes Students

Feria de San Marcos alters planned Semana Santa breaks for local schools

The Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) has confirmed the details of the Semana Santa 2025 vacations for students across the country. According to their official calendar for the 2024-2025 school year, students enrolled in preschool, primary, and secondary education are scheduled to enjoy their break from Monday, April 14 to Friday, April 25, 2025, returning to class on Monday, April 28.

For students residing in Aguascalientes, the situation is slightly different. The SEP modified the school calendar to allow students to participate fully in the Feria de San Marcos 2025, one of the state's most significant celebrations. Consequently, students will have their Semana Santa vacations from Thursday, April 17 to Wednesday, April 30, 2025, resulting in no classes during this festive period. The return to classes for these students will be postponed until Monday, May 5, 2025, largely due to the cancellation of academic activities on May 1 and 2, which are official holidays.

This adjustment means students from Aguascalientes will enjoy 18 consecutive days off for vacation, offering them ample time for recreation and family bonding during the Feria de San Marcos festivities. "Las vacaciones de Semana Santa para estudiantes de educación básica se llevarán a cabo del 14 al 25 de abril de 2025," noted the SEP. This quote captures the standard timeline for most students across Mexico, but Aguascalientes stands out with its unique schedule.

While the delay applies only to Aguascalientes, the SEP has confirmed there are no changes to the schedule for students in Jalisco and other states as of now. This situation has led to some parents and guardians raising questions about the holiday structure and how it impacts family plans for vacations and activities during the celebration period.

Besides the extended break for Semana Santa, basic education students will experience three long weekends scheduled throughout March 2025. The first will occur from Saturday, March 15 to Monday, March 17, honoring the natal anniversary of Benito Juárez. The second break follows from Friday, March 21 to Sunday, March 23, allowing teachers to register grades on the SEP platform, marking it as another significant time off for students. The last long weekend is set for Friday, March 28 due to the School Technical Council meeting.

The adjustments made by the SEP are not purely logistical; they take significant community events and celebrations like the Feria de San Marcos out of consideration. By giving students time to enjoy local festivities, the SEP hopes to promote both cultural engagement and educational satisfaction. "Las vacaciones de Semana Santa para el estado de Aguascalientes comenzarán el jueves 17 de abril y concluirán el miércoles 30 de abril," reiterated the SEP, providing clarity to parents worried about travel and planning.

Anticipation for these vacations is high among students and families alike. Many look forward to enjoying the break, either by traveling or simply relaxing at home. Families often use this time to explore the diverse cultural heritage of Mexico or to enjoy peaceful time off as school activities take a temporary pause.

Beyond the holidays, the SEP has outlined upcoming school holidays remaining for the 2024-2025 school year, which include: Thursday, May 1 for Labor Day; Monday, May 5 commemorates the Battle of Puebla; and Thursday, May 15 recognizing Teacher’s Day. Additional technical council meetings are scheduled for May 30 and June 27, with the last day of the school year set for July 16, 2025, when students can officially close their books for summer.

These planned breaks allow time for reflection, travel, and celebration, making the school calendar not only about the educational curriculum but also about the overall development of the student. Families are now encouraged to make the most of these extended breaks for both learning and leisure, fostering stronger community ties and personal growth for young learners.

Schools and local authorities are hopeful this year’s Feria de San Marcos will draw significant attention and participation, boosting the local economy as families travel from various regions to partake in the festivities. With the extra days off, students and their families can enjoy this pivotal cultural event more freely. It’s more than just time off; it’s an opportunity to strengthen community bonds and celebrate shared traditions.

With these varying schedules, families must stay informed and adapt their plans accordingly. The changes to the school calendar are finalized, and students across states are encouraged to prepare for their well-deserved breaks, balancing educational commitments with the joy of cultural experiences.

Overall, the revisions offer not only relief from academic pressures but also align with cherished local traditions, promoting richness and diversity within the educational sphere of Mexico. By prioritizing both learning and cultural engagement, the SEP is contributing positively to the student experience as they navigate their education during the 2024-2025 school year.
