Waymond Lee, Beloved Actor From Workaholics, Dies At 72

Waymond Lee's passing due to ALS leaves fans and colleagues mourning his legacy of talent and kindness.

Waymond Lee, the actor best known for his work on Comedy Central's sitcom Workaholics, has passed away at the age of 72. The news was first reported by TMZ, with confirmations from his sister, Norine Lee, and his wife, Diane Lee. Lee died on December 18, 2024, after complications from ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, which is known to affect nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Born on March 7, 1952, Lee was diagnosed with the degenerative condition in late October. Testing conducted earlier this month confirmed he had ALS. After spending just over a week at home, he was readmitted to the hospital due to difficulties with breathing and swallowing. Tragically, he remained hospitalized for less than a week before his death, with his wife by his side.

Lee's extensive career included appearances in more than 150 television shows and films. He played Waymond Womano, affectionately referred to as Old Way Way, in over 40 episodes of Workaholics, which aired from 2011 to 2017. The series, which starred Adam DeVine, Blake Anderson, and Anders Holm, followed the comedic escapades of three underachieving telemarketers.

His character was notable for often being the butt of jokes from the three main leads, but Lee embraced the role with humor and grace. Reflecting on Lee's impact, co-creator Adam DeVine penned on Instagram: "Rest in peace, Waymond Lee. I am gutted. He was such a kind man. My deepest condolences go out to his wife Diane and the rest of his family." DeVine emphasized how much Lee meant to everyone associated with the show, stating: "You will be missed, Way Way!"

Anders Holm, another co-creator of the show, shared fond memories of working with Lee, describing him as, "a Craigslist find" who was so funny they decided to cast him throughout the series. He noted, "Waymond was always chatting people up on set. Super positive. Goofy and fun, but would drop some real elder wisdom on us. The camera loved him. He just had this unique comic timing."

Acknowledged for his soft-hearted approach, Lee is remembered for delivering sincere comedic moments not just on Workaholics, but also through his performances across several prominent series and films such as Everything Everywhere All At Once, Iron Man 2, and Bullet Train. His television credits are extensive and include roles on Grey's Anatomy, Dexter, Parks and Recreation, and many others, showcasing his versatility as an actor.

Lee's illness left many shocked as ALS is a devastating diagnosis. It typically leads to the deterioration of motor neurons, resulting in loss of voluntary muscle control and can culminate in respiratory failure. Tragically, many individuals diagnosed with ALS have limited life expectancies, often only living for two to five years after diagnosis.

Admirers and colleagues alike have reacted with shock and sadness over his passing. Adam DeVine recalled how Lee was always willing to take on any outlandish role, saying, "He was always game. A true professional." Fans of Workaholics will miss Lee's unique contributions to the ensemble cast and the laughter he brought to viewers.

Beyond television, Lee’s filmography included appearances not only in high-profile films but also in music videos for artists like Jennifer Lopez, Ne-Yo, and Pharrell Williams. His diverse talents left a significant mark across different entertainment platforms.

Despite the extensive challenges he faced during his final months, Lee remained dedicated to his craft. He leaves behind his wife, Diane, and sister, Norine, along with countless fans and colleagues who admired him. Tributes are pouring in as those who knew him reflect on the joy and light he brought to their lives, cementing his legacy as not just a talented actor but also as a generous and caring human being.

The entertainment world has lost a kind-hearted soul with the passing of Waymond Lee, but his memorable performances will continue to resonate with audiences for years to come. Rest well, Waymond.
