Waymo Launches Next-Gen Robotaxi With Enhanced Safety And Fewer Sensors

The sixth-generation self-driving vehicle promises improved performance and accessibility for passengers

Waymo, the autonomous vehicle company owned by Alphabet, has recently introduced its sixth-generation robotaxi, showcasing significant advancements aimed at enhancing safety and efficiency.

The new Waymo Driver system is notable for having fewer sensors than its predecessor, yet the company asserts this will not compromise safety features.

Equipped with 13 cameras, 4 LiDAR units, and 6 radar sensors, the sixth-generation robotaxi is engineered to operate reliably under various weather conditions, including fog and rain.

By utilizing external audio receivers (EARs), Waymo hopes to bolster its vehicles' awareness of surrounding conditions, ensuring safer rides even during harsher climates.
