Washington Commanders Commit To New Identity Without Looking Back

Team executives confirm the franchise will not revert to the Redskins name, striving to blend tradition with modern values

The Washington Commanders have faced considerable scrutiny and debate since they transitioned from their former nickname, the Redskins, before the 2020 season. This shift has been more than just cosmetic; it has marked the beginning of what many see as a significant era for the franchise, which has historically been known by the previously accepted name since its genesis back in 1933. That name change was propelled by more than just branding—it followed years of accusations of racism and cultural insensitivity, which crescendoed during the summer of racial unrest ignited by social movements around the globe.

Since the team's renaming, the Commanders have sought to build their identity away from their racial slur past. Former owner Daniel Snyder's decision to abandon the Redskins label came against the backdrop of heightened criticism and pressure from activists pushing for inclusivity. The team briefly adopted the Washington Football Team name as they strategically searched for something new, finally settling on Commanders for the 2022 season.

Now, as public sentiment continues to evolve, members of the organization are tackling questions about whether they might revert to their controversial old name. According to marketing executive Patrick Arthur, this is not going to happen. During recent comments, he affirmed unequivocally, "We would love to have them back when they’re ready. Honestly, it’s on their terms. Our ownership has said we’re not going back to the old name. That’s not something we’re able to do." Arthur’s statements reflect the organization’s commitment to honoring its past without returning to the name widely perceived as offensive.

Despite the clarity from team executives, factions of loyal fans and former players still harbor feelings about the franchise's old identity. A myriad of petitions and fan-based rallies advocating for the return of the Redskins name have emerged, underscoring division within the fan community. Arthur expressed hope for these discontented supporters, stating, "But we’re going to carry as many traditions (as we can) and what we do going to honor the past." This sentiment reveals the organization’s strategy to blend elements of its historical identity with its contemporary branding.

The inconsistent feelings about the team’s name and ethos bring to the forefront broader discussions of representation and identity within professional sports. They reflect how teams navigate loyalty, nostalgia, and the realities of modern sociopolitical dynamics. A challenge for the Commanders moving forward will be acknowledging their storied past, reconciling traditional fans with newer followers, and embracing their current identity.

The team’s preparations for this upcoming season include clumsy attempts to celebrate their legacy without glorifying its troubled past. The forthcoming alumni weekend serves as one example, inviting over 150 former players back to the stadium, culminating with the retirement ceremony of legendary cornerback Darrell Green’s No. 28 jersey. Yet, the execution of such gestures can be delicate; as one observer noted, the previous year’s alumni weekend was noted for its awkward handling of sensitive topics surrounding the name change.

Since the sale of the team to billionaire Josh Harris and his investment group, the Commanders are striving for reconciliation and unity, recognizing the unique blend of their fanbase. The road hasn’t been easy; certain former players have expressed hesitations about their fit within the new configuration of the team. Still, others seek collaboration over division—former tight end Vernon Davis even stated officials should inspire players to wear old gear as they celebrate the entirety of the team’s legacy.

Meanwhile, the on-field product is progressing under the leadership of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. His impactful performances have caught the league’s attention, with conversations around his Offensive Rookie of the Year potential gaining momentum. Daniels has impressed by steering the Commanders to impressive offensive stats, including ranking fifth overall for total offense and second for scoring.

Week 7 presents the Commanders with the Carolina Panthers, with betting enthusiasts eyeing the team’s favorable performance stats as they aim to maintain their momentum. Yet, the upcoming match poses complications due to recent injuries within key positions, such as defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, who will be absent for the season.

On the fan engagement front, the Commanders are also tapping digital platforms to create buzz and fortify community relations. Initiatives to cultivate loyalty have seen social media strategies connect with current fans, exhibiting openness to adapt their methods for attracting new supporters.

Through it all, the Commanders’ ability to revitalize their roster and establish their identity without losing sight of their past remains to be seen. The franchise’s newfound direction emphasizes the importance of unity and acceptance as they encourage both old and new fans. While Arthur’s declaration insists on moving forward without retreating to previous monikers, the franchise will have to stay attuned to its fanbase's needs and sentiments if it hopes to forge strong paths forward.
