Waseda Secures Spot In Rugby Finals With 31-19 Victory

The victory over Kyoto Sangyo University marks Waseda's path to redemption and quest for championship title

Waseda University has successfully advanced to the finals of the All Japan University Rugby Championship with a decisive 31-19 victory over Kyoto Sangyo University during the semifinals held on January 2, 2025, at the National Stadium, Tokyo. This win marks Waseda's redemption after last season's crushing defeat to the same team, showcasing their determination to reclaim pride and championship glory.

The match began with high anticipation from players and fans alike, and it was clear Waseda had come prepared for revenge. Head coach Ryuhiko Ota’s strategy revolved around securing strong scrummaging positions and maintaining aggressive defense through every phase of the game. Waseda captain Kenji Sato highlighted the collective desire to avenge the previous defeat, stating, "心のどこかで、みんな、京産大にやり返そうと燃えていました。そう、プライドを取り戻そうと。セットプレーだったり、ディフェンスだったり…。この勝利は、去年卒業の4年生のお陰です。そして、いい準備をしてくれた4年生たちのお陰です" (Somewhere deep inside, everyone was burning to take revenge on Kyoto Sangyo. We aimed to reclaim our pride, whether through set plays or defense. This victory was thanks to the graduating seniors last year and the good preparation they left for us).

From the outset, Waseda showcased their intent with fierce defensive maneuvers, forcing Kyoto Sangyo to make mistakes. Sato was pivotal, scoring the opening try just minutes after kick-off, establishing the tone for Waseda's aggressive approach. Their powerful scrum played a significant role, leading to several penalties against the opposition. Waseda coach Ryuhiko Ota commented on the importance of the scrumming, saying, "スクラムで反則せずに組み勝ってくれたのが、今日の前半(26-0)につながりました" (Winning the scrums without penalties set the tone for our strong first half).

Waseda's offensive strategy relied not only on scrummaging strength but also on speed and precise passing. Eager to put points on the board early, they quickly followed up with another try, demonstrating their capability to dominate the game. By the end of the first half, Waseda had established a commanding lead of 26-0. The splendid execution of their game plan was evident as they capitalized on every opportunity presented to them.

Kyoto Sangyo, facing overwhelming pressure, tried to regroup and adjust their tactics during halftime. Coach Yoshikazu Hirose reflected on the team's struggles with discipline and performance under pressure, stating, "立ち上がりから、ワセダのプレッシャーにペナルティーとミスを繰り返して、それが失点につながりました" (From the start, we succumbed to Waseda’s pressure, leading to penalties and mistakes which contributed to our points loss).

The second half saw Kyoto Sangyo redoubling their efforts, scoring several tries to narrow the gap. Their persistence paid off as they finally found weaknesses in Waseda's defense. Nonetheless, the initial lead proved too much to overcome. Waseda showcased their resolve as they updated their strategies and relied on their defensive prowess to limit the impact of Kyoto Sangyo's attempts to rally.

Waseda's strong scrummaging and solid defensive strategies were evident throughout the match, with players like hooker Sato leading by example. Their performance served not only as revenge from the last season but also reinforced their reputation as contenders for the championship title. With the finals against Teikyo University approaching on January 13, 2025, both teams look to carve their names in rugby history.

Looking forward, Kenji Sato expressed confidence, stating, "自分たちのスクラムが組めた" (We managed to set our own scrums), implying Waseda's preparation and execution may lead them to victory. With the powerful Teikyo University awaiting, Waseda plans to continue pushing their limits and reclaiming their rightful place at the top of university rugby.

Waseda University is now just one victory away from their 17th national title, and the players are determined to go all out on January 13, where they aim to sing their victory anthem 'Araboru’ as champions.
