Warm Sunshine Today But Thunderstorms Loom Overnight

As temperatures rise into the 70s, Atlanta prepares for rain and winds ahead of a return to sunny skies.

As the residents of Atlanta, GA, bask in today's warm sunshine, the temperatures are expected to reach a comfortable high near 78 degrees. According to the National Weather Service, "Light south wind becoming southwest 10 to 15 mph in the morning" suggests that folks should enjoy the mild weather while it lasts.

Evening plans might be dampened, however, as showers are predicted to begin mainly after 3 a.m. on March 20, bringing with them a significant 80% chance of precipitation. Wind gusts are also forecasted to reach 25 mph, giving a blustery feel to the night ahead.

The rain is unlikely to let up by Thursday morning, as showers are expected to come in before 8 a.m. that day, with temperatures dropping to around 49 degrees by 5 p.m. During this time, the winds are anticipated to whip up gusts as high as 30 mph, creating quite a contrast to today’s serene conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, while things may be tumultuous on March 20, brighter prospects are on the horizon for March 21, which will see sunny skies returning with a high near 64 degrees. The calming northwest winds will relax to a gentle 5 to 10 mph breeze—much more pleasant than the gusts of the previous day.

The weekend doesn't look too shabby either; temperatures are stretching towards the 70-degree mark with mostly clear nights expected. However, Atlanta residents should brace for more dramatic weather on Sunday night, as showers and thunderstorms are set to enter the scene. Following the storm, more likely showers are expected after 2 a.m. on March 24, again boasting a 70% chance of precipitation.

Looking ahead to Monday, there will be a mixed bag with "Showers likely. Partly sunny, with a high near 68," per the forecasts. This tops off a wild weather week, fluctuating between sunshine and rain, leaving folks with just enough time to dry out before the next round of showers arrives.

By March 25, clearer, calmer weather is anticipated, allowing residents to finally breathe a sigh of relief with sunny skies and a high around 69 degrees, putting an end to this round of turbulent weather.
