Walgreens Plans Major Store Closures Amid Retail Struggles

The pharmacy chain will close 1,200 locations over three years as it seeks to improve profitability and streamline operations

Walgreens Boots Alliance is set to close approximately 1,200 of its U.S. stores over the next three years, marking a significant shift for one of the largest pharmacy chains as it grapples with declining sales and changing consumer habits. The decision was announced during the company's latest earnings report, highlighting the challenges faced by traditional retail pharmacies amid increasing competition and market pressures.

CEO Tim Wentworth shared details of this move, indicating plans to shut nearly 14% of Walgreens locations nationwide, with 500 closures already planned for the upcoming year. This restructuring is part of Walgreens' broader strategy to address stagnant drug reimbursement rates and shifts in consumer spending behaviors, which have left the chain struggling to maintain profitability.

"The closure of so many stores is emblematic of a company trying to course correct," remarked Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData. He pointed out the years Walgreens spent on acquisitions rather than focusing on optimizing its existing store operations, leading to this rough patch.

This announcement is not occurring within a vacuum. Walgreens joins its competitors Rite Aid and CVS Health, both of which have faced significant downsizing measures. Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy last year and is closing over 150 stores nationwide, citing similar financial strains, whereas CVS recently announced job cuts affecting 2,900 staff members to streamline operations.

Wall Street appears optimistic about Walgreens' future, with its stock rising about 16% after the closure announcement, signaling investor confidence in its new strategies. Still, the company's struggles are evident, with reports of nearly $3 billion losses last quarter, partially attributed to goodwill impairments from the overly aggressive acquisition of CareCentrix, coupled with dwindling revenues from retail sales.

With 8,700 stores currently operational across the U.S., the pending closures will inevitably affect communities nationwide. Locally, Walgreens has already faced scrutiny. The recent closure of two Walgreens locations within Milwaukee has left residents feeling the pinch.

This will not be the first major reduction for the chain. Over the last decade, Walgreens has already shuttered around 2,000 locations due to various market pressures. This latest round aligns with shifting consumer behavior, especially as new pharmacy delivery models and e-commerce play larger roles.

"Inflation and economic uncertainty have made consumers more price-sensitive, and pharmacies are not immune to these challenges," noted Rick Gates, Walgreens' senior vice president. The economic climate has worsened for traditional pharmacy models since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, which had previously driven many consumers to seek pharmacy services more frequently due to vaccination drives.

Plans to close stores at locations identified as underperforming aim to realign the company's operational focus and financial health. Many of these closures involve stores where customer traffic has steadily declined over recent years, placing additional challenges on local populations requiring access to pharmacy services.

The informed leadership at Walgreens hopes these initiatives will facilitate long-term financial stability. They aim to not only improve profit margins but also manage operational costs more effectively, which has been exacerbated by sluggish consumer spending.

Potentially affected communities are now left wondering how many of their local shops might go dark. While specific store locations slated for closure have yet to be formally announced, the first phase is anticipated to roll out over the next year, with more impactful cuts to follow as the company continues to assess its network.

What does this mean for the average consumer? Those frequenting Walgreens may face longer lines at remaining locations or find themselves traveling farther for their prescriptions. Some loyal customers, like Joseph Gearon from Westwood, Massachusetts, voiced their concern for losing local access to pharmacy services, especially those with life-saving guidance from their pharmacists. "It's inconvenient," Gearon said, expressing frustration about being forced to travel elsewhere.

Each closure brings with it not just the loss of retail space but also reduces accessibility for many, particularly seniors and lower-income customers who might struggle with transportation. The fallout from Walgreens' decisions could leave many communities with fewer options for pharmacy services, increasing reliance on alternative methods, such as mail-order prescriptions.

The situation highlights the need for pharmacy chains to adapt to technological advancements and shifting consumer habits to survive. With estimated annual health care and pharmacy marketplace valuations reaching new highs, companies like Walgreens may have to pivot to digital models to remain competitive.

Through all the changes, many within the industry remain hopeful. Walgreens’ restructuring will allow it to focus on core customer needs and retail fundamentals. The push for efficiency and performance could provide Walgreens the opportunity to redefine its identity as it seeks to forge connections with customers, both online and offline, once again.

While the road to recovery may be steep, the focus now shifts to execution and consumer engagement. The company's leadership emphasizes their commitment to turning around the brand for sustainable growth moving forward. How effectively Walgreens manages through this transitional phase remains to be seen, but there's little doubt the upcoming years will be pivotal.

Now, as communities brace for these changes, they're left pondering: how will they adapt without their familiar neighborhood pharmacies?
