Vishu 2025 Celebrated With Traditions And Togetherness

The Malayalam New Year festival brings families together with rituals, food, and heartfelt wishes.

Thiruvananthapuram, April 14 (VOICE) — The festival of Vishu, marking the beginning of the Malayalam New Year, has taken on a more secular character over the years in Kerala. Celebrated on April 14 or 15, Vishu is now embraced by people across various communities, with even non-Hindus actively participating in its customs and rituals. This year, Vishu falls on Monday, April 14, 2025.

A key highlight of Vishu is the preparation of the Vishukkani, a ceremonial arrangement of auspicious items meant to be the first sight one sees on Vishu morning. This arrangement typically includes a statue or image of Lord Krishna, fresh flowers, fruits, vegetables, gold coins, and a mirror, all placed in a traditional bell-metal vessel called an uruli. The auspicious time for Vishu Kani this year is at 03:30 am.

Another cherished tradition of Vishu is the Vishu Kaineettam, where elders give money to younger family members as a symbol of blessings and good fortune. Temples across Kerala witness heavy footfall on this day, with devotees thronging to seek blessings. Many Keralites don traditional attire, with women wearing sarees, young girls in skirts and blouses, and men in mundu or dhotis. However, the large joint family gatherings that once characterized the festival have diminished, largely due to modern work pressures and changing lifestyles.

While rooted in Hindu mythology, Vishu has evolved beyond a purely religious festival to become a cultural celebration embraced by all. It is a public holiday in the state, and households prepare an elaborate 26-dish Vishu sadya (feast), served on a plantain leaf. The sadya varies regionally; central and southern districts of Kerala serve strictly vegetarian meals, whereas northern regions often include non-vegetarian dishes alongside the traditional fare.

The bursting of firecrackers on Vishu eve is another regional distinction, commonly observed in North Kerala, while largely absent in the rest of the state. For the business community—especially jewellers and textile merchants—Vishu brings a seasonal boost in sales. Restaurants capitalize on the occasion, offering packed versions of the traditional sadya, with prices ranging from Rs 250 to Rs 2,500, depending on the brand and scale.

As people celebrate this vibrant festival, they also share heartfelt wishes and greetings with loved ones. The spirit of Vishu is about spreading love, positivity, and togetherness. Messages such as "Wishing you a year filled with happiness, health, and prosperity" and "May the spirit of Vishu fill your heart with warmth and love" resonate widely during this time. Sharing these warm wishes can brighten the day for family and friends, whether they are near or far.

Vishu is not just a day of celebration but a time to reconnect with roots and traditions. The festival signifies hope and new beginnings, with many expressing their aspirations for the upcoming year through shared greetings. As one popular saying goes, "Every Vishu is a new beginning waiting to be embraced." This year, as families gather to celebrate, they reflect on the importance of togetherness and the blessings of the past year.

Food plays a central role in the celebrations, with traditional dishes like Vishu Kanji, Vishu Katta, Thoran, and Alleppey Fish Curry prepared for the Sadhya feast. Vishu Kanji, a sweet dish made with rice, coconut milk, and spices, is a favorite among many. Another beloved item is Vishu Katta, made from freshly harvested rice powder and served with jaggery for added sweetness.

Thoran, often prepared with cabbage, is a staple side dish, while Mambazha Pulissery—a ripe mango soup—adds a sour flavor to the meal. For those who prefer non-vegetarian options, Alleppey Fish Curry showcases the spicy and tangy flavors of Kerala cuisine. These dishes symbolize the diverse flavors and experiences that the new year promises.

As Vishu 2025 unfolds, the festival not only marks the start of a new year but also serves as a reminder of the cultural heritage and the importance of family bonds. With its blend of tradition, spirituality, and community, Vishu continues to be a cherished celebration in Kerala.
