In a groundbreaking initiative, the Università Europea di Roma, with support from the Fondazione Lottomatica, has launched a study aimed at enhancing social cohesion and combating discrimination among adolescents through innovative educational methods. The study, which utilized cutting-edge technologies like virtual reality (VR) and mindfulness practices, involved 120 students from the Liceo "E. Majorana" in Latina, Italy. This project seeks to promote inclusion within schools as Italy navigates a complex cultural landscape marked by significant immigration.
The findings from the study were presented on March 25, 2025, at the university's campus located on Via degli Aldobrandeschi. The research included students divided into experimental and control groups, all of whom engaged in various psychosocial and educational activities designed to foster societal belonging and intercultural awareness. The innovative approach paired traditional learning with immersive experiences in virtual environments, allowing students to step into the shoes of others and better understand the realities faced by their peers.
One of the most significant results revealed a strong association between prosocial values and what researchers termed "moral anger"—a feeling that arises in response to social injustices. Following the intervention, a remarkable 83% of participants reported a heightened awareness of the negative impacts of prejudice in interpersonal relationships, leading them to express a greater openness and tolerance towards cultural and individual differences.
Riccardo Capecchi, the President of Fondazione Lottomatica, commented on the project, stating, "We are proud to have supported this innovative project that demonstrates how crucial it is to use modern methodologies, like virtual reality, to raise awareness among the younger generations on social cohesion and inclusion. The adoption of engaging technologies helps us connect with the youth's language, making the educational experience more effective in conveying important messages. Investing in educational initiatives that promote openness and appreciation for diversity is a priority for our foundation. We firmly believe that education is a powerful tool for building a fairer and more supportive society."
Dr. Angelo Panno, who coordinates the Master’s degree course in Psychology at UER, emphasized the need for interdisciplinary methodologies in the project. He stated, "This intervention research, supported by Fondazione Lottomatica, highlights how integrating interdisciplinary methodologies can support social cohesion and counteract ethnic discrimination among adolescents. This result is particularly significant as it develops within a context vital for adolescent growth, namely school. Using innovative tools like virtual reality, mindfulness practices, and participatory activities reinforces students’ sense of belonging and their openness to diversity."
The context within Italy has transformed dramatically over recent decades. Once a country of emigration, it has now seen a significant uptick in immigration, with 2024 marking the presence of over 5 million foreign residents—an increase of 3.2% from the previous year. In regionally diverse areas such as Lazio, foreigners comprise about 11.1% of the population, reflecting the growing need for educational interventions targeting inclusivity and understanding in schools.
In light of these demographic changes, the proactive measures introduced by the Università Europea di Roma pave the way for similar applications throughout Italy. The goal is to adapt and replicate this educational model across various educational institutions nationwide, ensuring that they serve as platforms for active citizenship and improved societal equity.
Students involved in the program expressed their hope for concrete actions to reinforce inclusion. They proposed various initiatives to be shared with educational authorities, including informative meetings on ethnic prejudice, the creation of social media campaigns for awareness, the production of thematic short films, and culinary masterclasses celebrating different culinary traditions. These suggestions underscore the students' enthusiasm and commitment to fostering intercultural dialogue and understanding.
As Italy grapples with its role as a multicultural society, the importance of educational initiatives like this cannot be overstated. The transformative potential of innovative educational tools and methodologies can help shape a future where diversity is not only accepted but celebrated.
By integrating technology and education, the work of the Università Europea di Roma and Fondazione Lottomatica highlights a path forward in addressing prejudice and promoting social cohesion. This project serves as a stepping stone towards building a more equitable society, encouraging young people to take active roles in fostering inclusivity and understanding within their communities.
