BLACKSBURG – With the 2025 schedule announcement quickly approaching, Virginia Tech football is set to learn its week-by-week calendar for the upcoming campaign on Monday, Jan. 27. Ahead of the Hokies’ full schedule reveal, let’s take a look at the schools making their way to southwest Virginia in 2025.
The Hokies will host a diverse group of schools at Lane Stadium in 2025, with programs representing the SEC, ACC, Sun Belt Conference and Southern Conference. With head coach Brent Pry heading to his fourth season at the helm, there is plenty of familiarity in the matchups and a new conference opponent joining the fray.
Tech’s slate includes four ACC opponents (Louisville, Wake Forest, Miami and Cal), Vanderbilt representing the SEC, Old Dominion from the Sun Belt and Wofford as the lone FCS program. Miami (Fla.) headlines the group as the only program to end the 2024 season in the AP Top 25 and presents an intriguing opportunity for the new-look Hokies.
The Hurricanes will boast new schematic identities with the departure of quarterback Cam Ward to the NFL Draft and the addition of former Georgia standout quarterback Carson Beck. Beck likely steps in as the starter to replace Ward, bringing a record of 24-3 from the previous two seasons.
A traveling opponent fans may be less familiar with is the Cal Golden Bears. Following the major conference realignment last year, Tech’s matchup against Cal will be the first meeting with the Golden Bears as members of the ACC. Virginia Tech and Cal have limited series history, with the only matchup occurring back in 2003 during the Insight Bowl.
Wofford returns to Lane Stadium after Tech won the inaugural matchup between the programs 27-7. Led by head coach Shawn Watson, the Terriers look to bounce back from their previous season's 5-7 finish.
Louisville returns to the conference slate after the Hokies last faced them when they were nationally ranked in 2023. The Cardinals, fresh off a 9-4 season and appear as another quality test for Virginia Tech’s young roster.
Wake Forest will return to compete on Worsham Field following Tech's victory during the Maroon Effect game last year. The program will look entirely different with the hire of new head coach Jake Dickert, who takes over after leading Washington State to three bowl game appearances.
Vanderbilt challenges the Hokies with their solid overall performance; having capped off their previous season with success in the Birmingham Bowl against Georgia Tech under head coach Clark Lea, who earned the SEC Coach of the Year honors last year.
Completing the list of opponents is Old Dominion, which will compete against Tech for the fourth consecutive season. The Hokies have won two of the previous three matchups, and Old Dominion's head coach hopes for continued improvement from the squad which saw success during the last season.
The ACC is scheduled to announce Virginia Tech football’s full 2025 schedule on Monday via ACC Network from 9-11 p.m. ET during the ACC Huddle: 2025 Schedule Release Show. Join our interest list to receive more schedule details.
MICHIGAN STATE – Michigan State football plans to officially kick off its spring practice season with the first practice on March 18, aiming to wrap up by April 19. The final practice day will likely be the annual open practice or spring game, allowing fans to attend and witness the team.
The Spartans will conduct 15 spring practices over five weeks, culminating with their season opener set for August 30 against Western Michigan at Spartan Stadium. With seven home games planned, all three non-conference matchups will occur at home this year.
Fans can expect exciting preparations as both teams gear up for the 2025 college football season, with Virginia Tech's mix of familiar and new foes and Michigan State's intensive spring training aiming to build momentum heading back onto the field.
