LUNENBURG COUNTY, Va. — A Virginia man was killed earlier this month after being struck by a bear falling from a tree during what has been described as a tragic hunting accident. According to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), the incident occurred at approximately 9:50 a.m. on December 9, 2023, in Lunenburg County, about 80 miles southwest of Richmond.
A preliminary investigation revealed the unfortunate events leading up to Harvey's death. A group of hunters followed the bear as it sought refuge from their pursuing hounds. When the bear climbed the tree to escape, one hunter shot it. Tragically, as the bear fell, it struck 58-year-old Lester C. Harvey, who was standing approximately 10 feet away from the bottom of the tree. Harvey, also known as Lester Clayton Harvey Jr., was later provided first aid by fellow group members until local fire and EMS arrived.
Despite receiving immediate medical attention and being transported to two different hospitals, Harvey succumbed to his injuries on December 13. The Virginia DWR confirmed no charges are currently being sought related to this incident.
Born in Halifax County, Harvey was remembered not only as a family man but also as “an avid outdoorsman” and “a friend to all.” His obituary reflected on his life as a self-employed contractor and his deep passion for outdoor activities. He leaves behind his wife, April McAllister Harvey, three sons, two daughters, and eight grandchildren. A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on December 19 at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, as friends and family mourn the loss of the beloved father.
Harvey's son, Josh Harvey, poignantly recounted the tragic day on Facebook, noting, “Dad was doing what he loved most, bear hunting with me and some of his good friends when he was injured.” He shared photos of their hunting group, illustrating the camaraderie shared among friends during their outdoor adventures.
Another member of the hunting party, James Russell Hudson, also expressed his condolences through social media. “Keep Mr. Harvey's family in your prayers,” he stated, underscoring the loss felt by those who knew him. With rich memories fueling the mourning, Harvey was remembered for his work ethic and generosity, qualities echoed by his children.
“If you know my dad, you know a hard-working, kind, caring man,” wrote Josh Harvey. His sister, Lindsey Bender, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting their father’s dedication, stating, “The ONLY time he missed work was to hunt.” Family members shared their appreciation for the lessons they learned from him, asserting, “heaven just gained a hell of (a) man.”
This incident is part of a troubling trend, as similar hunting accidents have occurred across the nation. Just recently, incidents involving bears have highlighted the risks involved with hunting. The DWR has advised hunters to observe state regulations carefully, as it is illegal to “cripple, harm, or dislodge” bears from trees during hunting activities.
Local wildlife officials stressed the importance of adhering to regulations to mitigate the risks associated with hunting activities. They clarified, “The department is not currently seeking any charges related to this incident.” This decision has drawn some attention, especially considering the circumstances of the accident.
Harvey’s untimely death resonates deeply within the hunting community, raising questions about safety standards and the need for stricter enforcement of hunting regulations. Many members have voiced their concerns over the inherent dangers presented within hunting activities, particularly when pursuing animals like bears.
Harvey's death, alongside the bear he hunted, serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife interactions. His loyal friends and family plan to continue their memorials through shared stories, including those of hunting success and camaraderie.
Ken Graham, who hunted with Harvey, shared about their outings, stating how hard it will be to return to the woods without his best friend alongside. The sentiment of loss echoes throughout the community, illuminating the deep bonds formed through shared passions.
The community of Phenix, Virginia, where Harvey lived, has banded together during this trying time, offering support to his grieving family. A fundraising effort on social media aims to help offset the family's costs during this challenging time, underscoring the strong community ties.
While Harvey’s legacy will certainly live on through the memories created with family and friends, the ripple effects of this tragic incident compel many to reconsider safety practices and awareness during hunting excursions. Harvey's family asks everyone to appreciate and respect the outdoors as their father did, cherishing every moment spent together.
The upcoming service at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church is set to provide closure for many and celebrate the life of Lester C. Harvey Jr.—a devoted family man and passionate outdoorsman who tragically lost his life doing what he loved most.
