Virat Kohli With A Brilliant Season The orange cap is not new for Virat Kohli as the former RCB captain also held the orange cap in IPL 2024. Talking about his ongoing season, then Kohli has amassed 442 runs in 10 innings, at an average of 73.50. Virat is having a season to remember as he brought up his 6th fifty of the season and got out for the first time while chasing a target against Delhi Capitals. Talking about the ongoing match, at the time of writing this article, RCB are 156/4 after 18.2 overs and require 7 runs to win off 10 balls.
Earlier in the day, Suryakumar Yadav had claimed the Orange Cap with a 28-ball 54 against the Lucknow Super Giants to lead Mumbai Indians to victory. Kohli snatched the Orange Cap from the head of India teammate Suryakumar Yadav as he led Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s chase of 163 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi against the Delhi Capitals. Kohli scored his half century off 45 balls on Sunday evening and then fell for 51 runs. This is Kohli’s 6th half century of the season, four of which have now come in run chases.
Yadav’s knock threw down the gauntlet for Lucknow Super Giants’ Nicholas Pooran, who was fourth in the standings with 377 runs from nine innings before the game started. After scoring 27 runs off 15 balls before perishing, Pooran climbed to third spot leaving behind Virat Kohli. But with his match-winning innings against Delhi Capitals, Kohli is now on top in the Orange Cap race. Suryakumar Yadav has scored 427 runs in 10 innings in IPL 2025. Thanks to his knock, Mumbai Indians claimed a 54-run victory over LSG on Sunday.
“It’s the first time I am wearing this (Orange Cap) after a long time, feels really special,” Yadav told the broadcasters JioHotstar in the mid-innings break. “I was really happy when we lost the toss, because it is really hot out there but scoring 200-plus it is really good from a batting point of view. It’s a good score and I feel the wicket is a little slow and I feel it is going to be challenging out there for their batting line-up, let’s see how it goes.”

In the process, Yadav also became the third fastest batter to get to 4000 runs in the IPL. While Yadav took 2714 balls to get to the milestone, he was only behind the Royal Challengers Bengaluru pairing of Chris Gayle and AB De Villiers. While West Indies legend Gayle took 2658 balls to get to Mount 4000, De Villiers needed 2658 balls.
Virat Kohli crossed Suryakumar Yadav to become the Orange Cap holder in the IPL 2025. It was a masterclass in run-chase form Virat Kohli after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) were reduced to 26/3 in a chase of 163 runs as the former RCB skipper maneuvered it with some precision. With Krunal Pandya playing his best IPL knock of all time, Kohli had the time to play his natural game and take the match to the final overs. So much so that RCB won the game with nine balls to spare.
“It was a top win, especially looking at the surface,” Kohli said. “We saw a few games here and this wicket played out differently than those. Whenever there's a chase on, I keep checking with the dugout, whether we're on course, my role, and what kind of innings I need to play. We were under pressure, 3 for 25-26, and then Krunal and I got a century partnership. He was outstanding today with the bat; he can make that impact and we were just waiting for him to come into this tournament with the bat as well. And today was his day completely, and he was brilliant.”
Explaining his modus operandi on such a wicket where balls were not easily coming onto the bat, Kohli said, “Look at the total on the board, the conditions, the bowlers who are due to bowl, who are the bowlers who are going to be hard to get away. I try to make sure my singles and doubles don't stop, and then you keep getting the odd boundary in between, so the game doesn't stagnate. That's always been my focus, keep working on rotating the strike. People are forgetting the importance of partnerships or going deep into the innings in T20s and this year you're seeing that you can't just come out and tee off from ball one. You need professionalism to read the situation and try to get into a position where you can start dominating the bowlers. It won't come easily on a slow pitch if you don't know how to rotate the strike. So that's pretty much my method. We've communicated beautifully, Krunal kept telling me to stay while he took his chances.”
While RCB's batting has been terrific this season, their bowling, led by Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, has been a massive differentiator. While Hazlewood sits at the top of the wicket-takers list with 18 wickets, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Krunal Pandya have combined to take 25 wickets so far.
IPL 2025 had its first no-result on Saturday night in Kolkata. So no major change at the top of the Orange and Purple Cap tables, but the Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya show in the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) vs Punjab Kings (PBKS) game led to some movement just below the first few names. Priyansh Arya, in his debut IPL season and scoring consistently and fast at the top of the order for PBKS, became the tenth batter to pass 300 runs this season, his 69 in 35 balls taking his tally to 323 from nine innings. That put him at No. 9. KL Rahul also has the same number of runs but his inferior strike rate makes him No. 10.
More than what happened on Saturday, though, is what could happen on Sunday. Mumbai Indians (MI) play Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the afternoon and Delhi Capitals (DC) take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) later. That means all of Virat Kohli (No. 2 with 392 runs), Nicholas Pooran (No. 3 with 377 runs), Suryakumar Yadav (No. 4 with 373 runs), Mitchell Marsh (No. 7 with 344 runs), Aiden Markram (No. 8 with 326 runs) and KL Rahul (No. 10 with 323 runs) will be in action. Good hands by a couple of them and/or failures for one or two players could throw the Orange Cap table into a tizzy.
And when B Sai Sudharsan, the table-topper, plays for Gujarat Titans (GT) against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Monday, he will know if he still has the cap or has to earn it back. After many days of clusters of ten, 11 and 12 wicket-takers, things changed over the past few days, with Prasidh Krishna (GT) first and then Josh Hazlewood (RCB) breaking away from the pack to get to the top of the table with 16 wickets apiece, followed by Noor Ahmad of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) with 14 and Harshal Patel of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) with 13 wickets.
Like with the Orange Cap scrap, things could change on the Purple Cap table after Sunday too, with MI vs LSG featuring Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur (both on 12 wickets) and DC vs RCB featuring Kuldeep Yadav and Krunal Pandya (12 each) as well as Mitchell Starc (11 wickets).
