Caborca, Sonora, witnessed a violent start to March 2025 as multiple incidents involving police and armed individuals unfolded over the weekend. On Saturday, March 1, around 11:50 AM, the State Police of Public Security (PESP) initiated a high-speed chase after detecting armed men driving dangerously through the Centro neighborhood of Caborca.
The armed suspects were traveling in a black sedan when they attracted the attention of the police. The scene escalated dramatically when the criminals collided with a white Dodge Ram, owned by a local business, after attempting to evade capture. After the crash, two suspects fled the scene, darting away on foot and attempting to hide within a nearby supermarket.
Reports indicated one of the suspects entered the bakery area of the store and threatened staff to gain strategic advantage, attempting to disguise himself by changing clothes. This individual was found by police as he washed dishes within the supermarket. The second suspect was apprehended by PESP officers and personnel from the Criminal Investigation Agency (AMIC) inside the establishment.
Following this violent altercation, police units were mobilized extensively, including agents from the Attorney General's Office. They collected evidence and discovered at least two long guns within the suspects' vehicle—a situation indicating the readiness of the criminals for potential armed confrontation.
Later the same day, around 3:30 PM, Caborca experienced another shocking event where military personnel engaged with armed assailants at the Costa de la Y Griega. The altercation arose when military forces detected suspicious activity from the occupants of a red vehicle. Once recognized by authorities, the suspects attempted to flee, triggering another police chase.
This exchange turned violent, with military personnel reportedly exchanging gunfire with the armed individuals. It concluded with military forces managing to neutralize one suspect on-site. The second suspect, severely injured during the confrontation, was transported by Mexican Red Cross personnel to the IMSS-Bienestar hospital where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.
Witnesses reported hearing the exchange of gunfire echoing through the area, prompting immediate local law enforcement responses. The military secured the vehicle used by the suspects, which contained multiple high-caliber firearms, indicating the serious threat posed by the duo.
The major incidents of the weekend left the community shaken as the pattern of violence continues to escalate. Local officials have yet to release names of the deceased criminals, but the situation has triggered discussions on the effectiveness and safety of law enforcement measures.
Since the beginning of the year, Caborca has seen increased military and police presence due to rising rates of violence and criminal activity, prompting concerns over public safety. Residents are left to reckon with the harsh reality of living within such turbulent circumstances, with both law enforcement and community members advocating for swift measures to combat this violence.
Officials and police have emphasized the need for community cooperation and vigilance moving forward. The significant mobilization of police and military assets during the weekend showcases the urgent response to mounting threats faced by local law enforcement. Authorities are striving to restore order and prevent similar dangerous incidents in the future as Caborca continues to bear the marks of conflict.
