The streets of Amravati, Maharashtra, turned chaotic on the night of October 4, 2024, as local law enforcement faced violent resistance from a large mob.
This unrest erupted over controversial remarks made by Hindu seer Yati Narsinghanand Maharaj, which were perceived by some as offensive to the Islamic faith, particularly concerning Prophet Muhammad. The incident, marked by stone-pelting, resulted in injuries to at least 21 police personnel and the damage of around 10 police vehicles.
The commotion began around 8:15 p.m. when protesters, comprising individuals from various organizations, gathered outside the Nagpuri Gate police station. They were demanding the registration of a criminal case against Narsinghanand for his inflammatory comments, which had circulated widely on social media shortly before the protest. According to Amravati Police Commissioner Navin Chandra Reddy, earlier attempts to address the crowd’s concerns seemed to bring some calm. The police informed them of the existing FIR related to the seer's remarks and assured them of an inquiry.
“Initially, the representatives were assured there was already a case registered, but as a video of Narsinghanand’s comments gained traction, the situation escalated rapidly,” Reddy stated.

While officers were engaged with the crowd, some individuals began hurling stones. Reddy described how officers struggled to control the situation as the violence erupted unexpectedly. "We were trying to reason with them when suddenly, stones started flying at our personnel," he remarked.

Following the disturbance, police took immediate action by issuing prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which restricts gatherings of five or more people, particularly around the Nagpuri Gate area. Anyone found violating this prohibition would face serious consequences, Reddy warned.
The aftermath of the unrest saw police file cases against approximately 1,200 people. Of these, 26 have already been identified as directly participating in the violence. The accused face charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including deliberately insulting religious feelings, which can lead to severe penalties.
Officials stated, “We are cracking down on those involved in rioting. We’ll not allow such behavior to disrupt public peace,” highlighting the seriousness of the offenses and the importance of accountability among community members.
