Viola Davis Shines As Action Star In G20

The new thriller showcases a powerful mother-daughter duo facing terrorist threats at a global summit.

Viola Davis is stepping into a new light as an action star in the latest thriller, G20, which premiered on April 10, 2025, on Prime Video. In this high-octane film, Davis portrays President Danielle Sutton, a former military veteran who must save world leaders and her family after terrorists take over a global summit in Cape Town.

Speaking about her role, Davis expressed her desire to take on a character reminiscent of iconic action heroes. “I wanted to be Indiana Jones,” she stated, adding, “I wanted to be the hero in the story.” Directed by Patricia Riggen, G20 allowed Davis to channel the spirit of action legends like Sigourney Weaver in Alien and Bruce Willis in Die Hard.

When she first received the script in 2015, Davis was astonished that the filmmakers envisioned her as the lead. “I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I am seeing myself way more expansively now. I wanted to put this out in the world for my daughter.” In addition to her acting role, Davis also produced the film alongside her husband, Julius Tennon.

In the film, Davis’s character faces intense challenges as she navigates the complexities of leadership amid chaos. “You are the one who has to jump through the plate of glass first,” she explained. “How do you save the world and then save your children and your husband when you are saturated with fear?” Davis’s portrayal of a strong female leader is not just about action; it also requires emotional depth.

Alongside Davis, the film features an impressive cast, including Anthony Anderson, Marsai Martin, Christopher Farrar, Anthony Starr, and Ramón Rodríguez. In a notable scene, Davis performed many of her own stunts. “I did almost all of it, believe it or not. I’m a masochist,” she joked. Reflecting on a particularly intense fight scene, she added, “Little Viola had the most fun.”

For Marsai Martin, who plays Serena Sutton, the rebellious teenage daughter of President Sutton, the opportunity to work with Davis was both exciting and nerve-wracking. “I was scared in my boots working with Viola Davis,” Martin admitted. “But only because I’ve watched Ms. Viola for so long.” Martin, who began her acting career at age five, made history as the youngest person to sign a first-look deal at a studio when she was just 14.

In G20, Martin’s character uses her intelligence and resourcefulness to help her family during the terrorist attack. “I read the script, and I saw the ending with just the two of us, going through trials and tribulations and fighting for our lives,” she recalled. “I was like, Oh, this is me and her.” Martin’s character ultimately takes charge, showcasing her resilience and determination.

As the daughter of a powerful leader, Serena Sutton is not just a side character; she plays a crucial role in the unfolding drama. “Serena is not just a rebel for obvious reasons, but she is striving to be strong in telling the world that she’s more than just the president’s daughter,” Martin explained. This representation is vital for young Black girls who aspire to break barriers in the entertainment industry.

Martin’s journey in Hollywood has not been without its challenges. After the cancellation of her Disney Channel comedy Saturdays, she reflected on the obstacles faced by Black women in the industry. “Now I’ve seen things, and I understand what it’s been like for other Black women before me,” she said. “I’m very aware that this industry was not built and meant for [Black people], but constantly creating and evolving something that was once not meant for us feels like a challenge to me.”

Despite the ups and downs, Martin remains determined to forge her own path. “I said when I was little that I wanted to be a legend, and I’ve learned what it takes to become one,” she noted. “The key is to choose yourself.” This philosophy guided her decision to turn down a Netflix movie that featured more sexual content than she was comfortable with, opting instead for projects that align with her values.

In addition to her role in G20, Martin is also working on various projects through her production company, Genius Entertainment. She is excited about an adaptation of the fantasy book Amari and the Night Brothers and a comedy about working in a chain restaurant. “They’re all like my children, in a sense,” she said about her upcoming projects.

While G20 brings action and suspense, it also highlights themes of family, resilience, and empowerment. The film’s opening sequence sets the stage for the chaos that unfolds when terrorists neutralize security measures and hold world leaders hostage. President Sutton, with her Secret Service agent Manny Ruiz (played by Ramón Rodríguez), slips away with a small group of leaders to strategize their escape.

Throughout the film, Davis’s character embodies a “no one gets left behind” mentality, a refreshing narrative in today’s political climate. The film’s release coincides with a time when audiences are eager for stories of unity and strength in leadership.

As the film unfolds, viewers witness President Sutton transform into a war hero, showcasing her grit and determination to protect her family and the world. The portrayal of a Black woman in such a powerful role resonates deeply, especially considering the current discussions around representation in Hollywood.

With its compelling narrative and strong performances, G20 is not just an action film; it’s a story of courage, family bonds, and the fight against adversity. Both Davis and Martin deliver powerful performances that inspire viewers to see beyond traditional roles and embrace the complexities of their characters.

As audiences tune in to G20, they are not only treated to thrilling action but also a narrative that underscores the importance of leadership, resilience, and the power of family. The film is now available for streaming on Prime Video, inviting viewers to join President Sutton and her daughter on their gripping journey.
