Vinh City Approves New Names For Administrative Units

The People's Council aims to honor local history with name adjustments for administrative units.

On May 7, 2025, the People's Council of Vinh City, during its 21st session (special session) of the 2021-2026 term, convened to review and approve the adjustment of names for new commune-level administrative units following their arrangement and merger. This significant meeting focused on the resolution concerning the adjustment of some contents of Resolution No. 24, dated April 25, 2025, which endorsed the policy of reorganizing commune-level administrative units in Vinh City.

The council discussed and voted on the proposed changes, which involve renaming five administrative units while maintaining the name of one unit. Specifically, the adjustments include changing Vinh 1 ward to Truong Vinh ward, Vinh 2 ward to Thanh Vinh ward, Vinh 3 ward to Vinh Hung ward, Vinh 4 ward to Vinh Phu ward, and Vinh 5 ward to Vinh Loc ward. The Cua Lo ward will retain its name as per Resolution No. 24 from April 25, 2025.

This renaming initiative has been systematically implemented across 33 administrative units, comprising 24 wards and 9 communes, which followed a rigorous process of collecting opinions from voters and conducting People's Council sessions at the commune level for voting.

According to the results, a total of 107,745 voters (representing households) out of 110,211 households participated in the opinion collection regarding the name changes, achieving an impressive response rate of 97.76%. Among these, 102,622 voters supported the renaming of the commune-level administrative units, which translates to a favorable agreement rate of 93.11%.

During the session, Phan Duc Dong, Secretary of the City Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Council of Vinh City, emphasized the importance of effective communication and public information. He stated that it is essential to clarify the objectives and significance of renaming the commune-level administrative units in a way that honors the historical, cultural, and geographical values of Vinh City. Dong urged the relevant authorities to focus on expediting the implementation process and to ensure that all documentation is completed in accordance with the established timeline.

This resolution marks a crucial step in the administrative evolution of Vinh City, reflecting a broader trend in Vietnam where local governments are increasingly engaging with residents to foster a sense of community and identity. By renaming these units, local leaders aim to enhance the cultural significance and recognition of the areas involved.

The Vinh City People's Council's decision to adjust the names of these administrative units is not merely a bureaucratic formality; it represents a deeper commitment to aligning local governance with the sentiments and historical contexts of the community. The adjustments also seek to promote a sense of pride among residents, fostering a stronger connection to their local heritage.

As Vinh City continues to grow and develop, the alignment of administrative names with local history and culture may play a pivotal role in shaping the identity of the city and its residents. This initiative is seen as a foundational move that could lead to further community engagement and development initiatives in the future.

In related news, during the recent public holidays, the traffic police in Nghe An province reported a total of 1,527 traffic violations, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding road safety in the region. Additionally, a tragic incident occurred where a woman was buried under landslide debris while collecting minerals at a mining site in Thung Pen, Châu Hồng commune, further underscoring the need for safety measures in such areas.

Looking ahead, Vinh City is also preparing for the upcoming Làng Sen Festival, set to commence on May 15, 2025, at the Kim Liên stadium in Nam Đàn district. This year, the festival will be held on a national scale, featuring numerous special highlights aimed at celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Overall, the recent adjustments by the People's Council of Vinh City reflect a proactive approach to governance that prioritizes community involvement and cultural recognition, setting a precedent for future administrative reforms across Vietnam.
