Vietnamese Farmers Thrive Through Digital Agriculture

Innovative techniques and e-commerce transform agricultural practices and income potential.

Vietnam's agriculture sector is experiencing a significant transformation as farmers embrace modern technologies to adapt to the digital economy and improve productivity. With innovative techniques being implemented across the country, farmers are finding new ways to thrive.

Farmers like Ngô Trọng Hiển, known by the nickname 'Hiển gà,' have taken substantial strides to modernize their operations. Hiển runs a successful poultry farm with 10,000 laying hens and 60,000 meat chickens, reportedly earning billions of đồng annually.

Reflecting on his progression, Hiển recounts, "With the income reaching billions of đồng per year, my farm's scale has expanded significantly." His commitment to learning and adapting has allowed him to boost his chicken rearing capabilities, increasing his flock and optimizing operational practices.

Applying advanced techniques, Hiển integrates climate control with automated systems and has enhanced his farm's infrastructure for maximum efficiency. His poultry farm encompasses around 40,000 square meters, featuring specialized areas for incubators and separate zones for breeders and market-ready chickens. This thoughtful organization has paved the way for efficient production, allowing him to meet the demands of the market.

Similarly, Lê Hữu Giang, another pioneer of modern agriculture, has successfully transitioned traditional practices to more streamlined operations. With more than 20,000 hens on his farm, Giang has implemented advanced feeding systems to improve efficiency. "Automated feeding systems save me time and reduce labor," he states, emphasizing the benefits of modernizing agricultural practices.

Giang's investment goes beyond simply upping his production scale; he has established temperature and humidity sensors linked to smartphones, allowing for immediate alerts if any anomalies occur. This endeavor not only safeguards livestock health but also ensures uninterrupted productivity.

Farmers are increasingly leveraging the power of social media and e-commerce platforms to market their goods directly to consumers. Nguyễn Thị Mơ, who engaged hundreds of customers via social media livestreaming, has witnessed great success. "Livestreaming has connected us with hundreds of customers across the country," she shares, highlighting how platforms are revolutionizing the way farmers sell products.

The rising trend of using digital platforms for sales has provided statistics to reveal its impact on product distribution. Reports indicate over 5.3 million agricultural households have established accounts on e-commerce websites like Postmart.vn and Voso.vn, marking significant progress toward digital adaptation.

Interestingly, recent events have catalyzed shifts within the poultry market. A surge in demand for eggs is fueled by rising prices attributable to avian flu outbreaks, devastating flocks and resulting in a significant uptick in sales of chickens and poultry feed—doubling and even tripling sales for many farms, particularly among businesses profiting from egg shortages.

John Berry, managing director of a poultry operation, notes the resilience of farmers during this crisis: "The prices of chicken and egg production have soared due to unexpected market constraints, yet we are adapting to continue our livelihoods."

To capitalize on the digital age, farmers like Đặng Thị Thúy are utilizing technology not only for production but also for marketing. Operating The Thúy Mộc garden, she skillfully combines beautiful imagery with strategic marketing through social media platforms, enhancing visibility and sales. "We share beautiful pictures on social media to attract customers, and it’s working remarkably well," Thúy asserts.

This method of direct sales—especially through prominent platforms like Facebook and various e-commerce sites—has reduced the need for intermediaries, allowing producers to retain more earnings. Early efforts at digital marketing now show tremendous results, with sizeable volumes of fruits and vegetables directly shipped to consumers.

Underlining the importance of these trends, Thiều Văn Son, Chairman of the Farmers' Union, affirms, "The implementation of digital sales has changed our business model completely," illustrating how digital tools empower farmers to secure their economic future.

The success stories of Vietnamese farmers demonstrate the power of technology and adaptability. With modern agriculture embracing digital solutions, farmers are not just surviving; they are flourishing, paving their way toward sustainable economic prosperity.
