Vietnam U17 Football Team Appoints Japanese Coach Yutaka Ikeuchi

The VFF aims for improved performance and World Cup qualification with new technical advisor for U17 squad.

The Vietnam U17 football team has made significant strides leading up to the 2025 U17 Asian Championship by hiring Yutaka Ikeuchi, a distinguished Japanese coach, as their technical advisor. This move, approved by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), aims to bolster the team's training methods as they prepare to compete on an Asian stage.

Yutaka Ikeuchi, born in 1961 in Aichi, Japan, brings with him decades of experience, having previously played for prominent clubs like Toyota Industries and Fujita (Shonan Bellmare) between 1980 and 1996. His international playing career included stints on Japan's national teams from youth levels all the way up through senior competitions. Following his playing days, Ikeuchi transitioned to coaching, where he has had considerable influence within Japanese football.

Over his extensive coaching career, Ikeuchi has held various influential positions, including head coach of Fujita Women’s Club and youth coach for Nagoya Grampus Eight. His exemplary work has seen him nurture numerous young talents, contributing significantly to the development of football in Japan. He has been the head coach for Japan’s national teams at U15, U16, and U17 levels, showcasing his ability to train youth players effectively.

With more than 20 years of coaching experience, Ikeuchi possesses advanced qualifications, including the prestigious “S” coaching license from the Japan Football Association (JFA). He has also served as the leader of training programs for JFA and played integral roles on technical committees, asserting his presence as one of the leading figures shaping the future of football.

The appointment of Ikeuchi by the VFF signals serious intent as the Vietnam U17 team gears up for the U17 Asian Championship, set to take place from April 3 to 20, 2025, in Saudi Arabia. The tournament presents Vietnam with the opportunity to secure spots at the upcoming U17 World Cup, with the stakes even higher this year, as FIFA has expanded the tournament to include 48 teams, allowing for eight Asian representatives.

Vietnam’s U17 squad will face formidable opponents, having been drawn alongside the defending champions, Japan, along with Australia and UAE, both of which have strong historical performances. According to Thanh Nien, "VFF hopes this Japanese strategist will coordinate with the U17 Vietnam coaching staff to develop advanced training methods and achieve good results." The integration of Ikeuchi's strategic insight is seen as pivotal for the team's performance, particularly against such challenges.

The Vietnam U17 players are expected to gather for training sessions starting early March as they prepare intensively for the championship. They will focus on adapting to Ikeuchi's advanced training regimes, employing innovative techniques to improve both individual and team performance.

This collaborative effort between VFF and Ikeuchi reflects the increasing trend of international cooperation in youth development sports programs, marking Vietnam’s serious commitment to enhancing their footballing prowess on the international stage.

With the U17 team already showcasing promising talent, the guidance of Ikeuchi may just provide the edge needed to contend strongly against tough rivals and achieve the ultimate goal: qualification for the globe's prestigious U17 World Cup. Fans and stakeholders alike are eager to see how this development will shape the team's prospects and the broader ambition of football within Vietnam.
