Vietnam has embarked on significant digital transformation initiatives aimed at enhancing the efficiency of public administration, with the latest development being the digitization of household registration data across the nation. Starting from March 1, 2025, the authorities of Nghe An province have launched an ambitious campaign to digitize 208,219 household registration records within the next month.
The total household registration records of Nghe An province amount to 2,231,474, out of which 2,023,255 (approximately 91%) have already been digitized since 2020. The remaining 208,219 records represent about 9% yet to be processed. This campaign is part of Vietnam’s broader strategy to streamline governance and provide improved public services through digital means.
The plan was developed following directives from the Prime Minister and local government officials, aiming to respond to the country’s urgent need for modernization. According to the local authorities, the digitization will facilitate the creation of digital data for household registration records, which will be integrated with the National Population Database and other specialized systems. This integration will enable efficient data sharing across various governmental departments, ensuring seamless access to information related to residents across Vietnam.
Sau the kick-off date, the local departments will have until March 31, 2025, to complete this mission, mobilizing efforts from various sectors. This campaign intends not only to fulfill legal requirements but also to underpin the digital economy and society of Vietnam as outlined by national objectives.
The digitization process will encompass several types of records, including birth registrations, marriage registrations, death registrations, and other relevant documentation necessary for effective population management. This initiative aligns with Resolution 06 of the Government concerning the development of applications for population data, identity authentication, and electronic verification to support the national digital transformation agenda from 2022 to 2025, with aspirations extending to 2030.
With more than 3,260 kilometers of coastline, Vietnam is also exploring alternative sustainable energy sources, including wave energy, to capitalize on its unique geographical position. Experts contend the country is sitting on vast potential, equipping itself to serve as not only a producer of renewable energy but also as a regional leader.
Private companies, such as those operating within the water supply sector, will also play their part within Vietnam's broader digital transformation initiatives. The Ha Tinh Water Supply Company, for example, is under new regulations, as per Decision No. 384/QD-UBND signed on February 26, 2025, allowing them to extract water from natural resources to meet local demand efficiently. The company must provide accurate accounts of their water extraction activities to comply with regulations, which aim to promote transparency and efficiency.
The Vietnamese Government's moves are indicative of its commitment to transforming the public sector through comprehensive digitization. By equipping public administration with modern technologies, the government aims to improve operational transparency, service reliability, and citizen engagement. This integrated approach to digital transformation reflects the essence of the National Strategy for Digital Transformation, which emphasizes inclusion and accessibility for all citizens.
With the digitization campaigns initiated both at the provincial and national levels, Vietnam is set on the path to redefined governance, one which embraces technology to fulfill modern societal challenges. Whether considering population management or infrastructure development, these initiatives represent significant steps toward building a more digitized and resilient economy.
