Vietnam is on the verge of undertaking one of its most ambitious infrastructure projects yet, with plans for a $67 billion high-speed railway connecting its two most significant cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. This decision, endorsed by the country’s National Assembly, aims to significantly improve the transport network between the north and south of the nation, cutting the current travel time by rail from roughly 30 hours to just five.
The railway, measuring over 1,500 kilometers (approximately 938 miles), is set to be built with cutting-edge technology, allowing trains to reach speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour (about 217 miles per hour). The project not only holds the promise of transforming domestic travel but is also anticipated to bolster the country's economic growth and attractiveness to foreign investors.
Construction is slated to begin sometime in 2027, with the hope of having the first trains operational by 2035. The railway is expected to serve both passenger and freight transport, featuring 23 passenger stations and five freight stations across 20 provinces and cities. Interestingly, state media has also indicated the project will be aligned with national defense purposes.
To finance the colossal undertaking, Vietnam aims to prioritize domestic funding but might lean on foreign loans as well, provided they don't impose restrictive conditions. According to experts and industry insiders, there is significant interest from Chinese companies, which have been building railways throughout Southeast Asia under the Belt and Road Initiative. Xu Liping, director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, highlighted the competitive advantage Chinese firms have, citing their extensive experience and operational success. He noted, “China’s high-speed railway technologies are world-leading, which puts Chinese companies in a strong position to submit competitive bids.”
Competition, particularly from Japan, is expected to be stiff, as it has also been actively investing and offering high-speed rail technologies within the region. The strategic significance of this railway goes beyond just transportation; it could bolster the Trans-Asian Railway network which is key for regional connectivity and serves as part of the broader strategy for stabilizing global supply chains.
