Vidyut Partners With JSW MG Motor India For Battery Rental Program

New initiative aims to reduce EV ownership costs and promote sustainable transport

Vidyut, a Bengaluru-based startup committed to revolutionizing electric vehicle (EV) ownership, has joined forces with JSW MG Motor India to roll out an innovative Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) financing program. This compelling partnership aims to make EV ownership more accessible by introducing the concept of renting batteries rather than buying them outright, starting at just INR 2.5 per kilometer based on battery usage. This new approach is expected to reduce running costs by up to 40% compared to traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

Launched on September 30, 2024, the BaaS program is targeted at several MG electric models, including the MG Comet EV, MG Windsor EV, and MG ZS EV. It presents customers with the opportunity to lower their initial investment on EVs significantly, as they will be able to purchase the vehicle without the expense of the battery. This not only makes the acquisition more affordable but also provides users with flexibility, allowing them to choose to rent the battery during operation or purchase it outright after the financing term, which can range from 3 to 5 years. Should they decide not to continue with the program, customers can exit at any time by settling the battery's residual value.

Xitij Kothi, co-founder of Vidyut, shared insights on this novel approach, stating, "People think of the battery as an asset, but we think of the battery as fuel. So why should you pay for it when the vehicle isn't on the road?" This perspective has galvanized Vidyut to introduce their BaaS model, which they believe is pivotal for altering perceptions around EV ownership.

Gaurav Gupta, Chief Growth Officer at JSW MG Motor India, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the program's goal of making EVs more viable for everyday consumers. They appreciate Vidyut's contribution to innovatively bridging the gap between potential buyers and EV lifestyle. The collaboration is particularly aimed at addressing common barriers faced by consumers, primarily the intimidating initial cost associated with EV ownership.

With the BaaS model, MG EV customers will also benefit from the assurance of 60% buyback value after three years of ownership. This feature is coupled with a comprehensive three-year maintenance package, which adds to the consumer’s peace of mind, effectively creating a seamless and confident ownership experience.

On the operational front, Vidyut has made substantial gains since its founding in 2021, primarily focusing on commercial applications of the BaaS model. The company operates across 30+ cities and has forged partnerships with prominent OEMs including Tata Motors, Mahindra, and Euler Motors. This collaboration with JSW MG Motor India marks their foray from the commercial sector to personal vehicles, which they anticipate will significantly broaden the adoption of sustainable transport.

Vidyut's recent initiatives extend beyond just new vehicles; they have also made strides toward the used EV market. The startup has begun targeting the resale of three-wheeler commercial EVs across key metropolitan areas, reflecting its ambition to provide comprehensive solutions for various segments of the electric mobility market.

Having successfully raised $14 million in funding, primarily from 3one4 Capital and other notable investors, Vidyut is poised to capitalize on this partnership with JSW MG Motor India. This strategic alignment is significant not just for the two companies but also for the broader Indian automotive market, as it signals growing confidence and maturity within the electric mobility space.

The easing of financial burdens associated with battery ownership could change the game for many potential EV buyers, allowing them to embrace sustainability without the substantial financial overhead typically associated with electric vehicles.
