Victoria Issues Total Fire Ban Amid Extreme Danger

Fire risk escalates across multiple districts due to soaring temperatures and strong winds.

A Total Fire Ban (TFB) has been declared across various regions of Victoria on December 16, 2024, due to elevated fire danger conditions. The ban covers areas including the Mallee, Wimmera, Northern Country, North Central, South West, and Central districts, highlighting the serious risks posed by the forecasted weather conditions.

This measure signifies no open fires can be lit or allowed to remain alight from 12:01 AM until 11:59 PM. The decision by authorities responds to the extreme weather patterns affecting the state, particularly the combination of high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds. Maximum temperatures are expected to soar between 42 to 47 degrees Celsius in northern regions, particularly 46 degrees Celsius noted for Mildura, and between 33 to 42 degrees Celsius across southern regions.

Jason Heffernan, Chief Officer of the Country Fire Authority (CFA), reiterated the importance of these bans. He stated, “Total Fire Bans are declared to reduce the risk of fires starting and spreading in dangerous weather conditions.” The conditions forecast for the day include severe wind gusts of up to 80 km/h, which could severely exacerbate any fires initiated, allowing them to spread rapidly and threaten communities.

Alongside the TFB, Victorians are confronted with predictions of dry thunderstorms and possible lightning strikes before the expected cool change around 2 PM. The shift to cooler weather, anticipated to spread across the state by evening, could also bring wet thunderstorms, prompting vigilance from residents.

Heffernan commented on the significance of preparedness, advising, “If you live in a fire-prone area, now is the time to review your fire plan and make sure you are prepared to leave early if needed. Don’t wait until it’s too late to act.” The potential for fire spotting—where embers travel up to 2-3 kilometers ahead of the main fire front—requires all residents to think critically about their risk factors and responses.

Residents are also urged to revisit their bushfire survival plans, as Heffernan emphasized, “Staying informed and acting early can make all the difference in a fire emergency.” Lifesaving actions include ensuring desired escape routes are clear and accessible. Heffernan also warns against non-compliance with TFB guidelines, stating, “Non-compliance with Total Fire Ban restrictions can result in heavy penalties, including fines or imprisonment.”

The CFA advises residents not only to avoid lighting fires but also to extinguish any campfires from previous days completely, emphasizing, “Use water, not soil, to put out your fire. If it is cool to touch, it’s safe to leave.” Machinery operation, such as harvesting equipment, should be handled with extra caution, as these activities can easily ignite dry grass.

Victorians wishing to know if there is currently a Total Fire Ban may find updates on the CFA website, which posts information by 5 PM the day before. Crews are asking residents to stay tuned to weather forecasts and local radio broadcasts for continuous updates.

While the heat and fire risk rise, Victorians are encouraged to prioritize their well-being. Hydration is key during these extreme conditions; people should drink plenty of water and opt for cooler activities during the hottest parts of the day. Maximize air circulation using fans or air conditioning units, and check on neighbors and loved ones, especially those who may be more vulnerable.

The CFA appeals to everyone to take these warnings seriously, reflecting the painful memories of wildfires past. The fire-prone landscapes of Victoria necessitate constant vigilance. Remember, “Understand your local risks and know what to do if a fire starts.”

While conditions may change with the predicted weather front, the immediate focus remains on keeping communities safe during this period of heightened fire risk. The twofold approach of maintaining personal safety and complying with fire bans will be pivotal as Victoria navigates the challenges presented by its weather and terrain.

With utmost attention to this alert, Victorians have the opportunity to prepare adequately, ensuring they are ready for fire season, which can change course rapidly.
