Vice-Governor Sergey Efremov Dies On Combat Mission

Tributes pour in for the legendary commander of the volunteer unit 'Tiger' after tragedy strikes

Sergey Efremov, the Vice-Governor of Primorsky Krai and acclaimed commander of the volunteer unit "Tiger," tragically lost his life during military operations on February 2, 2025. His vehicle reportedly came under attack, either from a mine or from Ukrainian drones, as he was returning from reconnaissance missions conducted within active combat zones.

Governor Oleg Kozhemyako confirmed the heartbreaking news, emphasizing Efremov's extraordinary contributions both on the battlefield and within local governance. "Sergey was not just an exceptional person; he had a big heart and was responsive. A field commander and organizer, we organized the ‘Tiger’ unit together, and he did everything to dignify its mission," said Kozhemyako.

Born on August 5, 1973, Efremov was highly educated, having graduated from prestigious military academies and receiving degrees related to state management and finance. His history of military service was extensive, and he was decorated for his courage, earning him the title of Hero of Primorsky Krai, among other accolades.

The circumstances of Efremov's death paint the picture of a leader who was deeply committed to his duties. Reports indicate his vehicle may have struck a magnetic mine or come under drone fire during active combat operations. This incident occurred as Efremov was returning from fulfilling his military orders, and sadly, another officer was also killed alongside him.

Denis Pushilin, head of the Donetsk People's Republic, highlighted Efremov's exemplary character: "He earned great respect as a brave and competent commander, possessing the highest moral values." This sentiment of admiration was echoed by others, including Yuri Trutnev, deputy chairman of the Russian government, who noted, "He was a real patriot, who demonstrated his commitment to the country at difficult times."

Efremov's military career began with notable service within the Pacific Fleet's Marine Corps, eventually leading to him founding the "Tiger" unit, which had become one of the most recognized volunteer formations throughout Russia. His leadership extended beyond the battlefield; he served as vice chairman of the Russian DOSAAF (Voluntary Society for Assistance to Army, Air Force, and Navy) before becoming Vice-Governor of Primorsky Krai, overseeing the internal political bloc.

Upon receiving the news of Efremov's passing, numerous officials paid their respects. Alexander Kostyenko and Natalia Shcherbina, senior leaders from Zabaikalsky Krai, expressed their condolences, praising Efremov's uncompromising position against injustice and notable patriotism. “This is not just sad; it feels like a deeply personal loss,” remarked journalist Lada Glybina, highlighting the widespread affection and respect felt for the fallen leader.

The tragic loss has been felt deeply across the region. Efremov's fellow officer and city council member Victor Tarabarin said, "The loss is great; even words fail us now". Indeed, many citizens of Primorsky Krai recognize Efremov's bravery, noting how frequently he visited frontline positions to support and uplift the troops.

Efremov often shared his philosophy on leadership with his unit, referring to the importance of leading by example. Following his passing, Kozhemyako has initiated the renaming of the "Tiger" unit to honor his legacy, ensuring his contributions will not be forgotten. "When the enemy invaded the Kursk region, he, alongside those he served with and learned from, took it upon himself to defend our homeland with courage and honor," said Kozhemyako, citing Efremov’s dedication to those ideals.

With numerous military honors, including the Order of Courage and the IV Class George Cross, Efremov left behind not only accolades but also reverence from his community for his unwavering spirit and commitment. Survived by his wife and four children, including one who continues to serve, Efremov’s legacy will undeniably resonate within both military and political spheres.

The impact of Efremov’s life and service extended beyond the battlefield. He was reportedly involved with veteran rehabilitation efforts later on as well. His return to civilian life following the first military operation was characterized by efforts to assist his fellow soldiers, helping them transition back to their normal lives.

The news of Efremov's passing has raised many conversations about the sacrifices made by those on the front lines, emphasizing the need for remembrance and recognition of the individuals who serve their country. His life serves as both inspiration and caution as the discourse surrounding military engagement continues to evolve.
