Veteran Telugu actor and former BJP MLA Kota Srinivasa Rao passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 83. He breathed his last at his residence in Film Nagar, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, after a prolonged illness, just two days after his birthday on July 11. Rao's death marks the end of an era in Telugu cinema, where his versatile and commanding presence left an indelible mark over a career spanning more than four decades.
Born on July 10, 1942, in Kankipadu village in Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, Rao initially aspired to become a doctor. However, his passion for acting blossomed during his college days, where he participated in theatre. Before entering films, he worked as an employee at the State Bank, balancing his early professional life with his love for drama. His debut came in 1978 with the film Pranam Khareedu, which also marked the debut of superstar Chiranjeevi. This film launched Rao into a prolific career that would see him act in over 750 films across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, and Malayalam languages.
Rao was renowned for his versatility, excelling in a wide range of roles from iconic villains to comic and emotionally nuanced character parts. His distinctive voice and expressive acting made him a memorable figure in Telugu cinema and theatre. Films like Aha Naa Pellanta!, Pratigatana, Khaidi Number 786, Shiva, Yamaleela, Atarintiki Daredi, Rakta Charitra, Leader, Ready, Sarkar, Bommarillu, Chatrapathi, Athadu, Aa Naluguru, and Malliswari stand out as some of his most acclaimed works. He also left an impression in Ram Charan’s 2013 hit Naayak and was last seen in the 2023 film Kabzaa, which featured an ensemble cast.
Throughout his career, Rao shared screen space with legendary stars such as Krishna, Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna, Nagarjuna, Venkatesh, Mahesh Babu, Pawan Kalyan, Allu Arjun, and Sai Dharam Tej. His ability to redefine negative roles with depth and nuance was particularly celebrated, earning him nine prestigious Nandi Awards.
In recognition of his immense contribution to Indian cinema, Rao was honored with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 2015. This accolade underscored his status as one of the most respected and accomplished actors in the industry.
Beyond his artistic achievements, Kota Srinivasa Rao also made his mark in politics. He served as a BJP MLA from the Vijayawada East Assembly constituency from 1999 to 2004. His political roles were well-received, both on and off-screen, with notable performances as politicians in films such as Julayi. His dedication to public service was acknowledged by many, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who expressed deep sorrow over his passing, calling it an irreparable loss to the Telugu film industry and the public of Vijayawada.
Chief Minister Naidu praised Rao’s artistic contributions to cinema and theatre over nearly four decades, stating, “The numerous memorable roles he played as a villain and character artiste will forever stay etched in the hearts of Telugu audiences.” Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy also mourned his death, lauding his distinctive acting style and offering condolences to his family.
Former Chief Minister and BRS President K. Chandrashekar Rao described Kota as a unique silver screen actor who carved a special place in the hearts of audiences, while Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan highlighted Rao’s phenomenal command of the Telugu language and dialects. Kalyan fondly recalled Rao’s role in his first film Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi and shared that their families enjoyed a close friendship.
YSR Congress Party president and former CM Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy acknowledged Rao’s inimitable mark on the film industry, calling his demise a significant loss. BJP State president P.V.N. Madhav remembered Rao as a gentle, friendly, and warm-hearted person who created a lasting impression both as an actor and politician.
Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Cinematography Kandula Durgesh expressed condolences, noting that Rao’s brilliance in over 750 films was matchless and that he filled the void left by legendary Telugu actors such as S.V. Ranga Rao, Kaikala Satyanarayana, and Rao Gopal Rao.
Tributes poured in from across the film fraternity and political circles. Megastar Chiranjeevi, who debuted alongside Rao in Pranam Khareedu, paid floral tribute at Rao’s funeral, placing a wreath of red roses on his mortal remains and bowing his head in respect. Chiranjeevi described the news as deeply disturbing and praised Rao’s ability to excel in any role, whether comedy, villain, or character. Actor Prakash Raj also visited Rao’s residence to meet his family and pay respects.
Veteran actor and writer Tanikella Bharani emotionally remarked, “The film industry’s 'Kota' has collapsed,” highlighting Rao’s inspiring journey from a middle-class background to cinematic icon. Popular actor Ravi Teja shared that he grew up admiring and learning from Rao, who felt like a family member to him. Renowned comedian Brahmanandam expressed disbelief at the loss, calling Rao a “son of Nataraja” and recalling their nearly four decades of collaboration.
Rao is survived by his wife and children. His final rites are expected to be held with full state honours, reflecting his stature as a beloved figure in both the film industry and public life.
As the Telugu film industry and fans mourn the passing of one of its most versatile and respected actors, Kota Srinivasa Rao’s legacy continues to inspire generations of actors and filmmakers. His profound impact on Indian cinema—through his memorable roles, his political service, and his philanthropic efforts—cements his place as a towering figure whose contributions will not be forgotten anytime soon.
