Veteran Actor Geoffrey Deuel Dies At 81

Known for his role as Billy the Kid, Deuel leaves behind a rich legacy

Geoffrey Deuel, the veteran actor best known for his portrayal of Billy the Kid alongside John Wayne in the 1970 film Chisum, has died at the age of 81. According to his wife Jacqueline, Deuel passed away on December 22, 2024, after struggling with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He spent his final days receiving hospice care at Largo, Florida.

Jacqueline Deuel confirmed her husband's death to The Hollywood Reporter, stating, "At midnight last night Geoffrey passed away and is with Peter. God took my ‘knight in shining armor’ gently.” This poignant announcement not only marks the loss of Deuel but also references his late brother, actor Peter Deuel, who tragically died by suicide on New Year's Eve 1971.

Born on January 17, 1943, in Lockport, New York, Geoffrey Jacob Deuel grew up and began his acting career as early as the mid-1960s. His breakout role as Billy the Kid came early, earning significant recognition and securing his place within the annals of classic Western cinema. His portrayal was even hailed as one of the best representations of the infamous outlaw, confirming Deuel's deserving place alongside iconic figures of film history.

Throughout his career, Deuel appeared on numerous television shows from the 1960s through the 1970s. His extensive credits include work on popular series such as The Monkees, The Invaders, The Flying Nun, Mannix, Mission: Impossible, and daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless for four years beginning in 1973. His versatility as an actor allowed him to tackle various roles and genres, showcasing his talent to audiences across the country.

Reflecting on their relationship, Jacqueline shared the closeness between Geoffrey and Peter, stating, “He and Peter were very close... You don’t ever get over a shock like [his death].” This connection between the brothers was significant, as they supported each other throughout their respective careers.

Deuel’s artistic talents extended beyond acting. During the 1980s, he took to the stage for performances in Tampa's vibrant Ybor City neighborhood. On top of his acting career, he pursued education and earned a master's degree from the University of South Florida. Eventually, Deuel dedicated much of his time to teaching as he worked years as a substitute teacher, demonstrating his commitment to education.

Upon hearing of Deuel’s passing, tributes poured from fans and those within the acting community. His obituary, posted on EverLoved.com, read, “Geoffrey Deuel lived a prosperous life distinguished by his notable accomplishments, the love he gave, and the love he received from those around him.” This dedication serves as a reminder of the impact he had on both his profession and his loved ones.

Deuel is survived by his wife Jacqueline, whom he married after four decades of being together, and his younger sister, Pamela. His legacy continues to thrive through the many lives he touched with his kindness, warmth, and dedication to his craft.
