Vernal Equinox Marks Arrival Of Spring Worldwide

As day and night become equal, cultures celebrate renewal and new beginnings across the globe.

Today, March 20, 2025, marks the Day of the Vernal Equinox, an astronomical event that ushers in spring for the Northern Hemisphere and autumn for the Southern Hemisphere. At 12:01 PM Moscow time, the sun made its critical transition, crossing the celestial equator and heralding the arrival of astronomical spring.

According to Professor Yuri Nefediev, head of the Astronomical Observatory at Kazan Federal University, the vernal equinox occurs when the sun moves from the southern hemisphere of the celestial sphere to the northern. "As you know, our planet rotates around the sun on an elliptical orbit, with the sun at one focus. It appears to us on Earth that the sun moves in the sky, describing a large circle over the course of the year known as the ecliptic," he explained. Today, during this significant point in time, the sun is located in the constellation Pisces.

On March 20, 2025, the vernal equinox occurs as the sun's rays strike the equator most directly, resulting in nearly equal lengths of day and night worldwide. Post equinox, the days will lengthen in the Northern Hemisphere, while they become shorter in the Southern Hemisphere. This fascinating phenomenon twice graces our calendar annually; the other occurrence is the autumnal equinox in September.

Many cultures have their own traditions associated with this day. In ancient Russia, the arrival of spring was widely celebrated as the holiday of "Komoeditsa," a festival honoring springtime and fertility. Modern interpretations of this day often involve a sense of renewal and new beginnings, encouraging people to set intentions and make resolutions.

Moreover, the vernal equinox is embraced globally; for example, it is recognized as Earth Day by the United Nations. This day not only symbolizes the transition in seasons but also serves as a reminder of the importance of environmental awareness.

As Professor Nefediev elaborated, "Interestingly, the equinox point is preparing to shift into the constellation Aquarius, due to the precession of the Earth's axis. Historically, one was considered to be born under a certain constellation if the sun was there on their birthday, but currently, one should make an adjustment of about half a month." This shift in astronomy evokes the deep connection between celestial events, culture, and human perception of time.

As the sun rises in the northeast and sets in the northwest post-equinox, nature awakens from its winter slumber. Professor Nefediev shared, "After the meeting of the calendar and meteorological springs, we greet the astronomical spring, symbolizing that life begins anew. Snow will start melting, tree buds will swell, and birds will find their way back home to dim the sound of the returning thunderous spring storms."

With the day and night becoming equal, some do point to the equinox as the moment of balance in nature. It sets the stage for longer days ahead that culminate in the summer solstice. "After today, daylight hours will gradually extend until the peak in June, followed by a decline towards autumn," he noted, painting a vivid picture of the yearly cycle.

Additionally, worldwide, the celebration of the vernal equinox is reflected in myriad cultural events and practices. In Japan, for instance, people honor their ancestors by visiting graves and celebrating the blooming of cherry blossoms around this time, with the holiday known as "Shunbun no Hi," which also begins a week before the equinox.

The vernal equinox signifies more than just a calendrical event; it embodies a rich tapestry of human experience spanning centuries. As we reflect upon its implications, both scientifically and culturally, it presents an opportunity to embrace the promise of rebirth and the cyclical nature of life. The equinox reminds us that while daylight may be increasing, it also enhances our appreciation for the balance between light and dark, embodying the harmony of existence.

As the Earth positions itself in its dance around the sun, the vernal equinox stands testament to our intrinsic connection with cosmic rhythms—a reminder to honor our history, traditions, and the delicate balance of nature itself.
