Varese Launches Urban Gardens Allocation Program

New initiative offers urban gardening opportunities for retirees and those facing economic hardship.

The city of Varese has officially published the announcement for the allocation of 86 urban gardens, aimed primarily at retirees and individuals experiencing economic difficulties. This initiative, set to run for three years, is not just about providing land; it embodies significant social and environmental values.

Nicoletta San Martino, the Assessor for Environmental Protection and Social Sustainability, stated, "Il bando ha un forte valore ambientale e sociale," emphasizing the initiative's dual focus on enhancing the quality of life for vulnerable populations and promoting green practices. San Martino explained the program aims to offer green spaces as excellent tools for socialization and gathering, particularly for the elderly or those facing economic challenges.

The urban gardens, each measuring 50 square meters, are strategically placed throughout Varese, including areas such as via Valle Luna at Calcinate degli Orrigoni, via Ghiffa Bassa at San Fermo, via Guaralda and via Salvore at Giubiano, and via Santa Maria Maddalena at San Carlo. This geographical distribution is intended to make the gardens accessible to various community members, allowing for greater participation.

Applications for these urban plots can be submitted until noon on March 10, 2025. Interested individuals may hand-deliver their applications to the Protocol Office located at via Sacco 5 or send them via email to [email protected]. This straightforward approach to application aims to encourage participation and make the process as inclusive as possible.

San Martino highlighted the gardens' role in fostering ecological practices and creating local food sources through the production of "prodotti a chilometro zero," or local produce. This approach not only supports the environment but also promotes healthy eating habits and community solidarity.

Prospective garden holders who have previously cultivated land are allowed to retain their garden plots if they meet the necessary criteria. This provision ensures continuity and allows for the development of established gardening practices, benefiting both the individual garden holders and the community as their practices can inspire others.

The allocation will remain valid until the conclusion of the third agricultural year, with rights extending to October 31, 2027. This timeline is structured to permit any new applicants to access plots currently under cultivation, ensuring gardens are available for spring 2028. The city is committed to supporting local residents throughout this initiative.

For comprehensive details about eligibility requirements, necessary documentation, and the application process, community members are encouraged to visit the Varese Municipality's official website. The local government believes this initiative not only provides physical spaces for urban gardening but also fosters social interaction, ecological awareness, and community resilience.

The urban gardens allocation initiative reflects Varese’s commitment to sustainability and social inclusion, encouraging residents to engage with nature, promote healthy lifestyles, and forge bonds with their neighbors. Through this program, the city aims to cultivate not just gardens but connections and community spirit, highlighting the intrinsic value of green spaces for all citizens.
