Uyghur American Association Protests Ghulja Massacre Anniversary

Gathering at Chinese Embassy seeks justice for victims of historic tragedy.

On February 5, 2025, the Uyghur American Association will gather at the Chinese Embassy in Washington, DC, to commemorate the tragic anniversary of the Ghulja Massacre, which marked its 28th year.

This protest aims not only to pay tribute to those who lost their lives but also to demand accountability for the injustices suffered by the Uyghur community, which persist to this day. According to the Uyghur American Association, "The Ghulja Massacre symbolizes theongoing repression faced by the Uyghur community in China, a strugglethat continues to this day with mass detentions, cultural erasure, andsystemic human rights violations."

The Ghulja Massacre occurred on February 5, 1997, when thousands of Uyghur men, women, and children protested for freedom of expression and religion. Their calls for tolerance and the end of racial discrimination were met with brutal force from the People's Armed Police and riot police units. Reports from the Human Rights House Foundation indicate conflicting numbers on the casualties, with estimates of up to 30 Uyghurs killed at the scene and over 100 others injured as security forces opened fire on the nonviolent protesters.

Further adding to the tragedy, more than 200 Uyghurs were reportedly sentenced to death for their roles in the demonstration, as stated by the Human Rights House Foundation based on Amnesty International reports from 1999. Despite the monumental loss of life and the peaceful intentions behind the gathering, those responsible for the ensuing violence have faced no consequences. The relentless repression faced by Uyghurs has only escalated under the Chinese government's claim of fighting against terrorism, as emphasized by the Uyghur American Association.

Since the Ghulja events, similar demonstrations have faced violent suppression, as seen on July 5, 2009, where police brutally suppressed Uyghur protesters in Urumchi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Reports highlight the lack of impartial inquiries allowed by the Chinese government about the excessive force used against peaceful protestors, contributing to the narrative of systemic violence against the Uyghur people.

The upcoming protest invites participants and supporters to stand together for justice, emphasizing solidarity with the Uyghur community. It is their way of not only remembering those who suffered during the Ghulja Massacre but also persistently calling out for the rights and dignity of the Uyghurs, which remain under constant threat. The Uyghur American Association encourages all who share these sentiments to join them at 3505 International Pl NW from 11 AM to 12 PM on February 5, 2025, to raise their voices for victims who have been silenced for far too long.

This history serves as not just a reminder of past atrocities but also as a clarion call for vigilance and action against the continuing violations occurring today. With widespread awareness and action, it is hoped the plight of the Uyghurs may be acknowledged and addressed globally, and justice may finally be served for the victims of the Ghulja Massacre.
