The Uttarakhand government is gearing up for the much-anticipated Chardham Yatra, which is set to commence on April 30, 2024. The pilgrimage, encompassing the revered shrines of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri, is expected to draw millions of devotees from across the nation and beyond.
Beginning on March 11, online registrations for the Yatra will open, with the aim of easing the process for devotees. Last year, the pilgrimage saw over 46 lakh participants, but many encountered significant challenges with the registration process. To mitigate these issues, authorities have decided to implement 60 percent online and 40 percent offline registration this year.
Offline registration will be available just 10 days prior to the Yatra, with systems established across 20 locations each in Haridwar and Rishikesh, and 15 counters set up near Vikasnagar. Crucially, starting from the previous year, VIP darshan privileges have been eliminated for the month leading up to the Yatra, meaning all pilgrims will have to access the temples through the regular process.
The opening dates for the temples have been confirmed, with Gangotri and Yamunotri set to open on April 30, followed shortly by Badrinath, which will be inaugurated following traditional rituals observed on the occasion of Basant Panchami. Added to this is the comprehensive security protocol being established along the pilgrimage route, including police posts located every 10 kilometers.
Recognizing the anticipated influx of pilgrims, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Health Minister Dhan Singh Rawat have emphasized the need for enhanced health measures. During preparations, officials noted the establishment of 26 Medical Response Points (MRPs) and 50 screening facilities along the Yatra route to adequately address health concerns for the large crowds.
According to R Rajesh Kumar, the Secretary of Medical Health and Medical Education, there are plans to expand health facilities, particularly considering the increase in footfall this season. "To address the growing number of pilgrims, we have arranged 26 Medical Response Points and 50 screening points along the Yatra route. Given the anticipated increase, we are considering extending these facilities even more," Kumar remarked.
A new requirement this year mandates all pilgrims to register on the Health Dham Portal, with those aged over 50 expected to upload their health profiles. The government is also exploring the use of RFID bands and the GIO Tracking System to monitor high-risk pilgrims, allowing for quick medical responses should complications arise.
To facilitate greater assistance for pilgrims, health friends will be deployed to guide and support visitors throughout their Yatra. This will be complemented by the installation of informative advisory boards and flex banners at transport hubs, hotels, and eateries, detailing health center locations and emergency contact numbers.
The establishment of a dedicated control room at the General Directorate is part of the government's strategy to oversee real-time health services throughout the Yatra, coordinating efforts on the ground effectively. This control room will work coherently with on-site officials to make timely decisions and actions as situations arise.
Addressing infrastructure, preparations are underway to expedite the stock of medical equipment and furniture for the newly constructed hospital in Kedarnath, ensuring healthcare facilities are well-resourced and ready to serve the high volume of pilgrims. The Director General of Health Services has been tasked with submitting the Utilization Certificate for funds allocated to healthcare enhancements, emphasizing the need for prompt action as the Yatra's start date approaches.
With the preparations well underway, it’s clear the Uttarakhand government is taking significant steps to provide health services and maintain safety for the spirits of millions eager to undertake this revered pilgrimage. The combination of improved registration processes, enhanced security, and extensive health measures sets the foundation for what hopes to be another successful Chardham Yatra.
While excitement builds for the sacred pilgrimage set under the breathtakingly beautiful Himalayan backdrop, the government’s strategy also places importance on the wellbeing of every visitor as they travel to these holy sites. All eyes will be on how these adjustments will bear out as pilgrims begin their sacred journeys once more.
