Utah State Football Player Drowned In Cliff-diving Accident

Community mourns the loss of Andre Seldon Jr., a promising cornerback and friend

LOGAN, Utah - Tragedy struck the Utah State football community as Andre Seldon Jr., a promising cornerback, was found dead this past Saturday after an apparent drowning. The 22-year-old athlete's untimely death has cast a dark shadow over the program, leaving friends and teammates in mourning.

Seldon's journey ended at Porcupine Reservoir, located about 40 minutes from the Utah State campus. According to the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at 2:20 p.m. on Saturday following reports of a possible drowning. Eyewitness accounts revealed that Seldon had been cliff diving but failed to resurface, prompting an extensive search.

Much to the sorrow of those who knew him, Seldon’s body was located by the Utah Department of Public Safety dive team around 9:05 p.m. that night. Preliminary investigations indicated that this was a tragic accident, with authorities citing consistent witness reports.

Looking back, Seldon had joined Utah State's football program just a few months earlier after transferring from New Mexico State University, where he played for two seasons under Nate Dreiling, the interim head coach at Utah State. “Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own,” Dreiling lamented. “Having had a previous relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss.”

The grief radiated beyond the football field. Dianne Sabau, Utah State’s athletic director, expressed her heartfelt sorrow over the loss. “Our Utah State University Athletics family is devastated over the sudden death of Andre Seldon Jr.,” she stated. “We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who loved Andre.”

As an athlete, Seldon was regarded as a rising star. Originally from Belleville, Michigan, he had begun his collegiate career at the University of Michigan before making a name for himself at New Mexico State, where he not only played but was a team captain. His performance on the field was notable; last season, he appeared in 15 games and recorded 36 tackles, seven pass breakups, and an interception.

Andre Seldon was not just an athlete but a well-rounded person who had made an impression on those around him. During a commitment ceremony prior to heading to Utah State, he had shared his dreams about making an impact on and off the field.

Following the tragedy, the football community has come together to support each other. Utah State University is actively providing emotional and mental support to its student-athletes and staff in the wake of this incident. Initiatives to create safe spaces for grieving have also begun, highlighting the close ties forged within the athletics department.

Condolences poured in from across college football. Messages of support and sorrow were posted by past mentors and fellow teammates on social media, sharing stories and memories of Seldon’s kindness and unwavering dedication to his sport. New Mexico State also released a heartfelt tribute stating, “The Aggie community is devastated to hear the news of the passing of Andre Seldon Jr. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”

In a world where the unexpected lurks around every corner, Seldon’s passing serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life. His journey, although cut short, left indelible marks on the lives he touched. He carried with him dreams of playing at the highest level in college football, a goal that now goes unfulfilled.

Looking ahead, his friends and family plan to honor his memory and legacy in tangible ways. A scholarship fund is planned to be established in his name, ensuring that future athletes at Utah State can pursue their dreams while keeping Seldon’s spirit alive.

As Nate Dreiling poignantly stated, “We grieve for Andre but also celebrate the moments we had. He was a shining light, and his memory will continue to inspire those who knew him.”
