Uschi Glas Reflects On Heartbreak From Cheating Scandal

After her first marriage ended in scandal, the actress found love again and continues to thrive in her career.

Uschi Glas, the beloved German actress known for her roles in films like "Zur Sache, Schätzchen" and "Winnetou und das Halbblut Apanatschi," recently opened up about the painful memories of her first marriage, which ended in scandal and heartbreak. After more than 20 years of marriage, Glas discovered that her husband, Bernd Tewaag, had been unfaithful, leading to a public fallout that left emotional scars that lingered long after their divorce.

The affair came to light in 2001 when the media published photographs of Tewaag with Anke Strohbach, a 27-year-old sausage vendor. The scandal quickly became known as the "Würschtl-Affäre" due to the nature of Tewaag's infidelity. At the time, Glas was 57 and described the experience as a devastating blow. "I couldn’t believe it," she recalled in an interview with the Austrian broadcaster ORF. "Many marriages fall apart, but I never thought it would happen to me."

The couple, who had three children together, were seen as a picture-perfect family in the public eye. Their marriage had been free from scandal, and they were admired in the film industry. However, the revelation of Tewaag's betrayal shattered that image. Glas made the decision to separate immediately, stating, "Whoever betrays me is out of my life." Yet, the aftermath of the separation was anything but easy.

Reflecting on the impact of her divorce, Glas admitted, "The failed marriage hit me hard. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone." The emotional turmoil was exacerbated by public scrutiny. "People gawk at you," she said, recalling the sensation surrounding the scandal. The public's fascination with her private pain felt like a double-edged sword. "It wasn’t our marriage that was the catastrophe; it was the sudden separation that was tough for me," she explained.

After a year of solitude, during which she took time to heal, Glas felt ready to start anew. "You have to get up at some point," she said, emphasizing the importance of moving forward. The divorce was finalized in 2003, but the scars remained. "The blow cannot be erased; it’s just there. But at some point, you have to say, 'Enough, the mourning period is over.'"

In 2004, Glas found love again at a golf tournament where she met Dieter Hermann, a business consultant. Their relationship blossomed, and she now refers to him as "the love of my life." The couple is set to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary in October 2025, marking a significant milestone in their life together.

Meanwhile, Tewaag also moved on, marrying Anke Strohbach, and according to reports from the online portal T-online.de, they are happily married. This turn of events highlights the contrasting paths taken by both Glas and Tewaag following their split.

Despite the personal challenges, Uschi Glas continues to thrive in her career. At 81, she is still active in the entertainment industry, reprising her role as Ingrid Leimbach-Knorr in the film "Fack Ju Göhte 3," which marked her return to the big screen after an eight-year hiatus. Her resilience and ability to navigate the ups and downs of her personal and professional life have made her a beloved figure in German cinema.

As she reflects on her past, Glas's story serves as a reminder of the complexities of love, loss, and the power of resilience. Her journey from heartbreak to healing resonates with many, illustrating that even after the deepest wounds, it is possible to find happiness once again.
